Little, why don't you just make a completely new character and call it a redesign?
it's not exactly a 'resprite' and is instead something completely different, without similarity or any similar concept.
To be fair it shouldn't be in the competition, otherwise we might aswell draw green blobs next to someones character and call it a resprite, you know what I'm saying?
That aside, its a bloody good sprite. Possibly the BEST I've ever seen you produce. So well done. Really like the pose and sword - excellent work.

Not that you should make a new one, maybe sharpen some of the details on your old one.
Infact, as this is your best sprite, have you ever considered giving his sword an aura or power? Could always make him a special custom made superhero with a major uber katana for Alectric's sprite contest, if you're worried it'll go to waste.
It'd get my vote.
