Use http://java.freenode.net//index.php?channel=lfe instead, regarding browserbased chatting.
If you want to pick up an irc client I think there's various mentioned throughout the topic, and stuff like pidgin support it as well.

You should be getting a huge barrage of text after that and then end up in the channel.
You could also try http://mibbit.com/chat/
In the top dropdown menu pick "Freenode", put in "#lfe" as a channel.

Oh about nicknames, I don't think names that start with numbers are allowed, so that's probably why it's not working.

Just use http://java.freenode.net//index.php?channel=lfe or http://mibbit.com/chat/
and enter something like "POtt1992" or w/e as a name instead of 19POtt92 and it should work.
