inspired from manxeater, I experimented a bit with mspaint (still my favourite
)I made a new transparency-filter ( see attachment)

hmmm, they can become really useful for example if you want to create 3/4- or 1/4-transparency. Nice work

In Photoshop, you can set the layer mode to "multiply" which will treat the white areas as transparent and just make it black where the mask is black. Alternatively, you can color-select and go from there. I suggest you google a few tutorials that show how layers can be used
