Stage Mode - Can't beat stage 3 difficult - STM1993 - 03-23-2014

I've been playing default stage mode, Difficult - I used to play only Normal. I'm trying to play solo without any criminal help. However, I never made it past stage 3-4(I usually lose at 3-2 or 3-3); I'm asking for help because I have no idea how to handle multiple enemies(more than 3 to be exact) and projectile spam. Note that I'm using any of the hero characters except Henry, but I'd like to stick to Dennis.

Main problems I face:
  • Mark. He has ridiculous throwing strength, long punching reach and D>J. D>J is hard to deal with because I can't use projectiles(it'd reflect), and I can't try to hit him out of it as I'd definitely get hit myself, and he loves to use it upclose.
  • Sorcerer. They spam projectiles and they cast it pretty quickly, and then they'd run away.
  • I can't isolate and kill the boss, especially if my character uses arest instead of vrest for dash attacks. I end up killing soldiers all too often.
  • For bosses I have most trouble with: homing projectiles(Dennis & John), Dennis' spin kick, Henry's running and D>A in the middle of D>J attack, Louis armor(because of other enemies). Palm attacks if I'm using state 3005/3006 attacks.

What I normally do:
Spam >>JA (I need to work on my precision and pressing speed).
Throw knives if possible, ignore other weapons.
Constantly run away and then use D>A.
I tend not to use Defend because I end up getting stuck.
I rely a lot on D>J attacks; most are good for dealing with projectiles.
I tend to row out of attacks a lot. In hindsight that's probably not a good idea.

A quick replay.

I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. Am I being too aggressive? What should I improve on?

EDIT (060414):
Things to improve on:
* Button-pressing for >>
* Avoid flipping after falling in stage
* Do not lose cool on taking damage
* Timing for hitting A for normal attack
* Accuracy of JA
* Learn when to use D>A, D^A & DvA
* Master timing for attacking alongside D^A
* Learn to watch crowd and split the crowd
* Improve button handling of grab
* Learn to let go of direction just before attacking

Bat is perfect his lazers remove sorcerers attacks
his useful Fj skill hit mark away
lazer can hit many opponents
bats are for cuz they spawn for each fighter more

RE: Stage Mode - Can't beat stage 3 difficult - YinYin - 03-23-2014

Don't ignore weapons. Light weapons all give you vrest and protect you from combos (weapon gets hit instead of you once you are knocked out).
Also heavy weapons can deal with groups and projectile spam.

Seconding YinYin. Dash-attacking with the baseball-bat hits multiple opponents AND reflects projectiles. Scythe just slams them down altogether. Crate for ultimate justice and rock when crate is not enough. Knife also works as a dash-weapon. Baseball when you want to buy some time + a little damage to foes. Same with boomerang.

Now looking at your recording and writing things down that come to my mind while watching...

You might want to try out playing at a reduced framerate to give yourself more time to react. It's easier to dodge projectiles thus.

Diagonal dashing is good; always changing z-pos is hard for the AI to deal with.

NEVER defend when a mass of opponents is charging at you. Run away or, if hitting is inevitable, try to jump (you get to the falling-frames quicker in-air).

If someone carries a weapon (especially one of the longer-ranged ones such as scyte), do not engage close-combat directly. Diagonal dashing or projectile-spam. Or Davis' dragon punch :p

When a couple blasts is coming at you, don't try to counterblast. Unless you know exactly what you're doing (keeping in mind that Sorcerers and Jacks could always back up their projectiles with even more projectiles), it's best to just move up/down. Defend only when you know that (a) there is not more coming at you and (b) you will have enough time to evade anything approaching you after your defense-stand. Knight is slightly different because he can just tank through pretty much anything :D

The whole "picking out the boss from the crowd"-thing is more or less a mix from patience (constantly getting rid of minions) and good aim (diagonal dash right into the crowd and still hitting the boss). Slower game-speeds help significantly.

...then again, I'm not that much of a solo-stage-player, so feel free to disregard any of my points :p

And now, they keep stealing the weapons and boulders aren't nearly as effective because it often gets deflected and Dennis has a weak throw. Now my problem is facing enemy Woody/Dennis for their D>J. No improvement in stage progress(3-3). I also started using D>J less because unlike Firen, he has exposed areas and hit lag causes them to be further exposed.

The reason why I used D>A a lot even if it doesn't work is because it'd distract the AI as long as there is a ball coming at them. I'll be trying more D^A and using >>J to dash more than to use J twice. Perhaps I should also change the way I input moves - by pressing all keys at once rather than one button at a time?

EDIT:
Big improvement now, finished all heroes in 3-3, only died because I got confused with my controls at the end with D>A against a sorcerer ice ball. Key is abusing D^A and >>JA and being VERY patient(which I hadn't been, I kept trying to attack) just like when fighting YinYin, and taking advantage of the fact that the enemies also try to grab weapons. Not gonna bother with D>A except in emergencies. Reserve D>J for getting away if I can't use run, and try not to steer into a big crowd(at most 3 enemies and hit via z-axis). It seems heroes become stupid when holding a weapon, tending not to use their special moves - good to know when fighting Davis, possibly Dennis and Woody.

Also got the inspiration I want for my character. Yay!

Yeah, weapons usually make AI behave stupid. If there is milk somewhat nearby, they'll ALWAYS go for that so you can ambush them while picking up. If they're close to other weapons, they usually pick those up as well which leaves them for a couple TUs unprotected. Can't confirm that they behave much different while holding a weapon (unless it's a heavy weapon, of course). Davis always manages to dragon punch me :p

@v: love you too, don

1-Never use defend or any kind of attack against the ball spam.Usually the comps throw the balls in a single line so just jump diagonally to dodge to balls.
2-If there are more than 3 comps(in Brokeback) just try to run away from the comps instead of attacking them.
When they run after you just single out any one or multiple(in case of deep and rudolf) only if possible else just keep running.Eventually you will get to hit any of them.
3-Try not use any other attack instead of dash attack coz other attacks take time for the char to get to his initial position to dodge again and try to attack all the comps with a diagonal dash attack.For ex..if there are a bunch of bandits standing and u got for a straight dash attack chances are at least one of them will not get hit and since u are in the same line as of him instead he is gonna hit you so opt for diagonal dash attack.
4-Drink the milk as soon as they come if ur life is even a 5% less.
5-Improve ur dash attack by playing against 3 easy comps in hk.
6-For singling out the boss u need to improve ur diagonal dash attack.

RE: Stage Mode - Can't beat stage 3 difficult - STM1993 - 04-09-2014

1) The AI will actually shoot/throw weapons diagonally, and are actually very accurate with it espeically when you're already in mid-air from jumping. I have no problem with avoiding otherwise and never block unless its a diagonal shot with no other way to avoid. That's why I'm trying to get my >>J input to be perfect and avoid using J+J to dash.
2) Been trying to do that. They tend to stick too close to each other and the longer I keep the battle going, the more I begin to make mistakes from inputs and from getting weary. I have absolutely no problem with Deep or Rudolf, its mostly Dennis & Woody.
3) Already do that. And I'm using Dennis, whose >>JA has arest instead of vrest like Deep/Rudolf, which means I can only hit one enemy with >>JA, which makes things harder. I can use a weapon, but I find using a weapon slower and I tend to mess up my controls and end up throwing. That, and the AI can suddenly block, and Dennis has a lot of issues with his DvA missing his last kick.
4) Already do that.
5) Will consider it. With Mark + Jack + Sorcerer on Crazy.
6) As mentioned, they stick too close together and my >>JA is arest. I hit one, the rest will combo me. Plus, I don't want to free criminals.

Thanks for the advice though.

You actually seem to be doing pretty well, you can consistently pull off Woody's D^A>JA and can defend against physical attacks quickly. In 3-2 you tended to charge into a group with >>JA. In 3-4 you lost to John because you seem to have gotten a bit tired and started to make input mistakes, then got punished for it when they get behind you during D^A. The last problem is that you are a bit too eager to use normal attacks on sorcerers; they hit pretty fast. Finally, your timing on deflecting balls is a bit off, tending to get hit by fireball.
