Default avatar

Alright guys, I've set up a poll on MangaD's behalf. 10 days to vote.

Its multiple choice & public poll because some options do overlap in a way that makes sense (ie: I want a transparent template default avatar, but I also want it to be <=80 pixels).

First things first, I will not copy the ava from 13z over here. 13z is one community and LFE is another. Copying each other is pointless.

I'll have to agree to @A-Man, an avatar seems mandatory. In fact, every social site I have joined so far had some kind of default avatar enabled. Some went with the logo of the forum, others have an emoticon. Those that require some sort of "real identity" (i.e. failbook, university-backends, ...) have either a stylized silhouette of a portrait shot, optionally with a question mark in front. It just gives a clear sign saying "Hey, I'm just a temporary placeholder, feel free to put your personal touch in here!"

It is for this reason that I strongly advocate for keeping a default avatar. The current design definitely does not fit the default theme (after all, it's still the default MyBB-avatar for a bright theme). I have tried to mess around with a few design ideas but so far, nothing valuable has come to my mind. Open to suggestions and design-proposals.

The argument that you are a bit lazy at scrolling seems to suprise me, considering that modern websites generally like to space things to ridiculous amounts. A minimum post height doesn't seem too bad, really.

Just my two cents, I'm not hateful enough for more.

i think you do, the default forum avatar gets automatically set when you don't choose and avatar for your self.

Yep. That is why I said 13th zone style. But I guess that is subjective. Well, looks like most people would go for a template though.

I like this idea. But some things have to be taken into consideration. Like, the default avatar needs to fit both the white and dark theme and follow the rules of a placeholder.

I suggested to the MyBB team a while ago that they add support for having a default avatar for each theme. But right now it is not possible.

The default avatar is for the users that do not submit any avatar of their own. Would you force users to submit an avatar at registration phase? I do not quite understand...

How about the viewers get to decide what kind of avatar they would like to see on anonymous users maybe even decide what kind of avatar they would like to see on other members without having anyone see them. So for example if i want to see all anonymous avatars as bandit but maybe someone wants to see them with their own custom one thats a dragon or something like that... they should be free to do so. People who don't care about the logo can leave that option alone and they would see the current avatar that we have now. It doesn't impose on anyone and you get to allow more freedom with this.

Personally I think it would be funny to add funny looking avatars on all of you guys just like i do with my own contact pictures on my phone. What do you guys think?

I would not force but that does not make a problem with having that default avatar like at the momment.

Here's an example of what i was talking about

pic 1) Users upload their desired avatar so other viewers can see them the way they want to be envisioned
pic 2) If i delete my avatar and remain anonymous and people don't care they can leave it as is.
pic 3 & 4) If i delete my avatar but someone misses it they can put it back up, maybe even put up a silly one in place.



And this is all based on an individuals preferences. So if someone else doesn't like someone's avatar they don't need to complain via pm they can simply upload a pic of their own and no one else has to see it.

^ I've never really found an issue with another user's avatar to want to change it though, it isn't worth the effort.

I personally haven't either... but i like the idea of having this option available for those who want to play around with it. That goes for pretty much anything as well (within reason).
