button view program

ive written this little program that detects your button inputs and overlays them onto your screen
which i find really usefull myself for recording fights/combos/tutorials

ive kept it as simple as possible:

the arrows light up white when they are pressed,
the buttons in the colors of the official control guide;
you can drag it anywhere and close it by right clicking it


however it is not linked with lf2 in anyway and the buttons are preset and cannot be changed right now
(arrow keys and ctrl/shft/enter for defend/jump/attack)
so it will also act when you are not playing

does anyone find this interesting/usefull/wants to have it for recording awesome combos and show everyone how precise he can hit the buttons?

It loooks very interesting and useful.

I would certainly like to get my hands on it YinYin. Purely for the sake of experimentation and uberness.

It's good in the sense that, unlike conventional tutorials where they just display the moves you have to do to achieve a combo, this program allows you to be able to see the exact timing to pull it off, and records your moves more accurately and clearely than only viewing the .lfr demo itself. However, using it alone won't be good enough for tutorials, since it may not be easy for viewers to catch all the moves in one view, especially if the player is really fast, and as mentioned, it's not linked to LF2's system, so you need a video recorder while playing if you wish to record the moves (if it were linked together with the demo system, it'd be great!). It shows the keys you press, but not whether the keys pressed were effective (ie: if you were "dancing in pain" and press D^A, you won't dragon punch immediately, but only after you are no longer in pain).

It'd be pretty good for a simple program, only thing really glaring is preset buttons. Would be nice to release it despite its current limitations.

(btw, around 0:14, that's a horizontal dragon punch, not vertical)

@stm: you can always edit your recordings and slow them down if you are mashing inputs too fast - or the other way around one can pause the video to catch single inputs
also the dragon punch after a dance of pain still is effective isnt it? i dont see a problem with that - could teach ppl to not hammer the input again but to wait until it can actually be executed as its already been pressed
if you wanna make a good tutorial you obviously have to be good at what you do and not mash too many buttons randomly so its easy to follow

maybe ill be able to add a configuration dialog
if i release it without that ill have to point you towards glovepie or autohotkey tho

I'm assuming that would probably take one of two methods:

Linking it to the Little Fighter program itself, possibly the more difficult of the methods.

Second would be to have an interface where the person is allowed to input their controls (similar to the way you can input them into Little Fighter program) and have it affect the overall product.


The second seems the far easier option in my opinion. Now my question is YinYin:

What programming language did you make it in?

I'm intrigued, very intrigued.

vb.net 2 sadly - im totally unhappy with it but i cant get around learning and setting up something else to work with

Simple in between? Now I definately am interested.

Nothing wrong with VB.net. Learning languages is a major effort anyway, if a current language works... it works :D.

did anyone experience any problems with the previous version? like buttons lighting up randomly?

or any problems with the new one?

it now uses the lf2 controls - you only have to select the player whos input should be shown (right click it)
you can also start the program with a commandline/shortcut/batch and add a number to have that player selected on startup
eg:
start buttons.exe 4
for player 4

also you can start it multiple times and set each to a different player to record everyone at the same time

could someone test whether this works with controllers aswell?

doesn't appear to work for me (tried wsad, up down left right controls). I think it's not reading control.txt correctly.
