[Discussion] Locking up files?
#1
Since love is over, lets build walls.

BluePhoenix Wrote:Why in the world are suddenly all people wanting to protect their stuff?

I guess these two threads are kinda something to whizz through, additionally:
http://www.lf-empire.de/forum/showthread.php?tid=2037
http://www.lf-empire.de/forum/showthread...948&page=1

So, the questions are: Do you think it okay to lock up files, protecting them from being used for anything else but your modification? Is it really necessary? Does this not close doors? Why do you/do you not feel the urge to lock up the files you released/will release?

Pro/Contra points and concerns welcome too.

I won't lock any of my files.
Besides the fact, they are only the rubbish of an amateur, the moves can still get copied. EVERY skilled DCer (so not me) can simply play the game, look concentrated on the moves, and copy them. With or without lock.
And if somebody (like me) wants to learn fromt he DC of a mod? With lock (s)he couldn't...

So, in my oppinion, it is useless to lock files. It will only be an obstacle for people, trying to learn new methods. Not more...

example for my char, someone already mentioned it's in a "mod". course, i clearly specified it's not supposed to be. but i won't mind it not being locked up (well it's not), but kids <15 tend to just publish it in their "modification" which is usually just a collaboration of other stolen works.

the lock wont stop that
in the assumption that a character is put into a modification (actually i should've split the sentence coz i swapped subjects).

well the internet gets exploited so often lol. sometimes its really hard to not get your worked misused.
for me, i just put on a an attitude "well this stuff im doing aint serious so no worries what happens to it" so right now, i dont really care what happens to what i've made so far.
~its been a long time coming~

These two statements actually work in favor of locking. If kids <15 tend to publish a collaboration of stolen works, they wouldn't be a skilled DCer. According to Alblaka, every skilled DCer can find the moves with or without the lock. Obviously, locking is to prevent the stealers, which are these kids <15 from getting to them, not the skilled DCers >15. Skilled DCers wouldn't want to steal works because they can simply design a work of their own that represents themselves and is much better.

Conclusion: Locking is extremely effective if you don't want your works to be stolen because the Advanced DCers (>15, according to Azriel) won't bother to steal them, and the newbie DCers <15 can't (because according to Alblaka, only the skilled DCers can 'eye-ball' the moves).

Hope this makes sense :D.

...hmm...

Honestly, I believe its up to the creator of the work
as to if they wish to 'lock' their work.

And for me ... I don't care^^
I would be flattered for someone to think my work is that good,
so much in fact that they wish to utilize it:)

Oh, and I disagree with the age-stereotyping.
Trust you're all well.

@1477
it's dangerous to say Person A said ____ and Person B said _____ when they're your interpretations (in the moment).

@topic
it's not the locking/unlocking of data that bothers me. it's the maturity of the lf2 community. i just used 15 coz that's a kinda average "turning point age" for people to start thinking about credibility for their work, and hence others' work. moleboxing the NTSD mod is probably a good idea because there is proof that data is being stolen, and not just once or twice (seeing that there's not many naruto fans out there who care about other people's work; and the ones who do care are probably the ones whose work is stolen). Plus, if people want to publish others' work, the ones who won't steal will almost definitely ask for the creator's permission And give credits (there's cases where the author has left, so credits may be given without asking permission because there's no contact).

for cases like my char, i can't be bothered looking for the guy(s) who included it in their mod because it's a waste of time, and it's just one case (so far). in any case, anyone worth making an enquiry to (in my very individualistic opinion) would be someone from LFE or the chinese official forum, because usually the other lf2 groups out there are usually really young and it's difficult to teach about 100 people general respect for others (if it's one or two young kids, it's possible to teach them respect if there's sufficient matured people around). @LFE discussions just like this thread's are ones that kids can learn from. If there's a problem, we can sort it out. If the author of w/e doesn't give permission, then just accept it and move on. They may decide to give you (and others) permission later. Usually whether the permission is given to you or not is the same for everyone else (unless someone else whom the author especially trusts may be given permission and not you).

personally i'd be in favour of not moleboxing things, because then DC techniques can be learnt by going through other people's data (it's hard enough understanding someone else's data if they're really messy, and going between multiple files (try follow MH's Kingdom LF2 stage stuff...)).

from spiderman 3: we always have a choice.

Rubbish of an amateur? = =
Care to back that up?

The only reason I started to molebox ntsd was because of all the other copy cats mods that started to pop up using my data. And I was annoyed like the rest of you of all the other naruto mods that was spawning everywhere.
