Time it was somebody got the answer (you guessed, right?).

Scoreboard:
Cirno - 8
Blue Phoenix - 6
Lauli - 5
NightElb - 2
RectumHoward - 1

Question 14 (5 points):
A number with 1000 digits (namely 200820082008...) needs some digits removed to get the cross sum 2008. How many digits can you MAXIMAL remove from that 1000-digited number to get the cross sum 2008?

(Fun fact: This was a question in the Känguru of Mathematics today. And I solved it in short time :P (I know I'm a show-off xD))

What? Remove 1996 digits from a number with just 1000 digits?

LMAO......

anyways, the number we have is 2008200820082008200820082008..., right?

OK, let's see...

2+8 makes 10, so...
200(2+8) equals 2000, leaves me with a rest of 8...
200(2+8) fills out a space of 4x200=800 digits
If we remove the first three digits, we'll get 1998 as a cross sum. Now we add on the other end another 4 digits, so we get:
800-3+4=801.
That leads me to the conclusion, that you can remove a max. of 199 digits.

Dang, I'm so stupid :O

All righty, next try...
Zeros don't count for the cross sum, so we can remove them. There are 500 Zeros contained in that number. Now, let's see with the 2's and 8's...
We have 250 8's and 250 2's. The question is... how many 8's fit in 2008? The answer is: 251. Dang. Ok, then... we take 250 8's to get to the 2000 and 4 additional 2's to get to 2008.
That makes 250+4=254 needed digits.
So, you can neglect a maximum of 1000-254=746 digits in that number to get the cross sum 2008. Right?!

That's mean, you had it in a multiple-choice-version, I had to solve it without any answer given. Was it at least a 5-Point-Question?
btw, how did you score, I've taken several of these tests...
