The moonlight illuminated the mountainside landscape. Leaves rustled in the light autumn breeze. There was a distinct crunch as three young creatures trekked through the ocean of leaves on the path at the foot of the mountain.

“Never knew it was so beautiful here,” said a yellow duck, as he waddled along.
“Well Alec, if only you would get out of your pond some day. Then you’d see that there was actually more in this world than red snappers,” said a small koala.

Further in front there was a purple cat with a sack slung across his back, galloping lightly on the path. He frowned at his two young friends behind him. “Quicken up, you two! The barracks are another kilometre down the track. And we have to get there before dawn,” complained the cat.
“Coming,” Alec droned, and continued at his own leisurely pace.

As the sun slowly climbed up the horizon, the three young creatures marvelled at the sight of the towering barracks. It was built of sandstone, but was still a ghostly pale at that time of day. Every single stone fitted in at right angles to each other; there was not a single gap between adjacent blocks. It was the perfect structure.

"Quick, guys," said the purple cat, "over this way." He hurried his friends to the back of the barracks. "Now, where was it?"
Suddenly, there was a rustling. Alec and the purple cat Phil turned around, but their friend the koala was nowhere to be seen.
"Where do you think Blow went?" asked Alec.
"How many times have I told you not to call me 'Blow'?!" came a voice from near the wall. It sounded as if it was far away.
Phil and Alec went to inspect the area around the wall. "Down over here," came the voice again.

The hole in the ground near the left end of the wall was deep. It had been covered with some loose twigs and grass to disguise it, and the koala had stepped right onto it. It was still dark, and Phil and Alec couldn't see the bottom of the hole, but they were sure their friend was down there.
"That's where it was," remarked Phil. "Good job on finding it, Blow."
There was a distinct grunt.
"Okay, Alec. Jump down there," said Phil.
"Are you out of your mind!?!? Do you have any idea how deep that hole is?"
"As a matter of fact, I do." And Phil pushed Alec into the hole, before leaping down into the unfathomable mass of darkness, taking his sack with him.

The morning light flooded in the window. It was a great day. A great day to live.
"Go bring me my breakfast."
"Yes, sir."
"Oh, and get me my clothes."
Yes, sir."
"And shine my boots after that as well."
"Yes, sir."
Life was good, especially when you had hundreds of minions.
Then there was a face. It was the same face. It haunted him day and night. And it would never stop.
It was massive. Especially its mouth. And all he could see was an infinite darkness as it opened its mouth.
"Someone Else... Someone Else..."
And that was all he heard before he woke up in darkness, forehead covered in sweat.

Alec and "Blow" looked at Phil clawing furiously at the dirt wall. Their eyes were drooping and their stomachs grumbled for food. It was going to be a long day.
Phil, however, was still digging at the wall with all his energy. Just when his two friends began drifting into sleep behind him, the wall came through.

Light flooded through the hole. It was dim, but enough to wake the duck and the koala. Together they clambered through the hole.
"Welcome to the Eggpire Barracks, guys," said Phil warmly.
They were standing at the bottom of yet another hole. There were oil lamps on stands dug into the side of the vertical tunnel. On the other side, there were iron footholds that ascended into the darkness above the three. Phil jumped on the footholds and bounded up the tunnel while Alec and the koala groaned at each other.
It was indeed going to be a long day.

The room was a circular hall. There were displays of trophies behind glass panels along the sides and a red carpet surrounding the circular wooden table in the middle. There were seven high leather chairs on the red carpet; one was noticeably higher and had a different colour from the rest. On the other side of the two thick wooden doors to the room there was a panel. On it there were two words embedded in gold lettering: Conference Hall.

A faint creaking sound interrupted the silence in the Conference Hall. Three creatures climbed out from the trapdoor positioned under the centre of the wooden table. They crawled out from under the table and walked towards the thick wooden doors. Slowly, they pried the doors open with their hands to prevent any creaking, and entered the Main Hall.

“Blow, do you think we could do with some weapons here?” asked Alec. The room was filled with weapons of all sorts: bows and arrows, javelins, spears, slings, slingshots and axes; they were all hung on the walls. Around the hall were also various artworks and sculptures, depicting some of the battles and leaders in Eggpire’s history, decorated with embedded jewels and golden leafs. Blow, however, did not hear Alec. He was concentrated on something else – a long blade that was placed horizontally on stands. He recognised it as one of his clan’s most valued weapons and treasures: the Koala Katana. Its hilt was decorated with dark green swirls, resembling leaves, and it had an emerald pommel stone. It grip was small, but was an exact fit for Blow’s paws as he picked up the katana.

Beside the katana, Blow also recognised other weapons: the Duckscaliber, the Reaper Scythe, the Catlass and the Banhamma. Above them all hung a tapestry. The tapestry depicted a horrific battlefield. There were eggs on one side of the tapestry, armed to the teeth and weapons at the ready. Opposing them were many different species of animals, but they seemed to be dispirited and almost wanting to flee, with many lay slain on the ground. And above the tapestry, hung the Eggpire’s legendary word: the Eggshard Sword, the mythical sword which had won the Great Wars long ago. It was believed to have been forged from the infinitely hard metal of a meteorite, mixed with very sharp egg shards, which made it a weapon more effective at shredding than slicing.

“Is there anything they’ve done that they haven’t put on display?” said Phil.
“This is getting peculiar… How come they have hold of all the clans’ weapons?” said Alec.
“Obviously they defeated them and stole their weapons. Hurry up, guys. Put what you want into the sack and let’s get out of here,” said Phil.

With Phil’s words, the Duckscaliber, the Catlass and the Koala Katana were all taken from the wall, and they began creeping quickly but stealthily to the Conference Hall. However, just as they were exiting the Main Hall, Blow caught sight of a tome and a stand. It was a rugged book, and it seemed that it was only half of the entire volume. What caught his attention was the title. It read, “ɥʇɹɐƎ uo ʎɹoʇsıH”. Blow quickly snatched it, put it into the sack and scurried off after the others.

One after another, Alec, Phil and Blow bounded down the tunnel and through the broken wall into the bottom of the hole. They rested there as Phil began rebuilding the wall. The sun was just peeking out on the horizon and the warmth chased the bitter frost of the night away. Now Blow and Alec stared at each other, and they realised how filthy they looked. Then they stared upwards, and they realised how much they would have to climb. “I think the day just got longer,” said Alec.

And they started climbing upwards, with Alec struggling, unable to get much of a grasp on the wall of the hole. Blow and Phil climbed to the top promptly, and Phil took out a coil of rope out of the sack. “I knew I’d need this,” said Phil, unravelling the rope and casting it down. “Ouch,” said Alec, “that hurt.”

Alec emerged out of the hole moments later, muscles sore and gasping for air. “Quick, we have to get back as soon as possible, otherwise their guards will be on watch,” said Phil. Thus began the journey back home for the three creatures, Phil leading energetically in front, and Alec falling behind from exhaustion. Blow’s mind was one something else - the tome. I should probably ask SirFrog about it when I get back, he thought.
