So, can someone explain to me how this entire 'Hamachi'-thing works?
Does it allow you to connect to other people (surprisingly difficult with LF2's native network-mode) or is it just some sort of chat?

Yes, it allows you to connect to other people.
In Hamachi you can join certain "rooms", by typing in the room name and password. You connect to someone else by both joining the same room.
When you play LF2 via Hamachi, you must type in his Hamachi-IP instead of his regular IP. (The Hamachi IP is displayed to the left of his nickname in Hamachi.)
It's as simple as that.
