Ok second sprite!

Mmkay, changed the hair's shape and shading a bit. Plus I changed his eye so it looks a tiny bit more chibi-ish.

From my two years of spriting experience, I can conclude that:

Sprites are used in games where the background will not always be pitch black. If you want to look at a sprite in full detail, you always make the background a colour that makes it easily visible. In my opinion, putting a black background so it will look better is completely pointless.

People that use white as a background just show that their sprites are clean from any dirty pixels. See it from that perspective :P

You got an interesting spriting style going on there. I personally would prefer some smoother shadows (as in blurring the transition b/w the base & shadow color a little). The hair looks a little strange, there's a little too much of the forehead uncovered, imo. Also, what you might want to fix is the shape of the head. For me, it looks a little more like a cube than an LF2-face. Try making the chin a little more slanted, it'll improve the sprite quite well ;)
