Problem with Image converting

Hi to all
i am new to this site and very excited by watching this site. I have a simple problem to to convert image in other files. I want to convert *.gif file in *.jpg file. But when i change extension of file then images looks like in other crashing. Is there any software to convert file. If so then reply me.

Also, ever heard of MSPaint? Yes? Then open up the file and choose File>Save As... and specify the new filetype.
