Not just more shading.
-_-
Try to sprites first, if you think you're good enough for spriting, then do the face pictures.
Oh, this isn't what I say, it's something PF do.;)

Tbh, it's possible to suck at spriting while doing fairly decent face-pics. It's all just a matter of practice in the respective area. Then, again, it's important to get the basics down and to be able to apply them onto different subjects. Spriting, in this matter, is, because shading is kept fairly simple due to low resolutions, a little easier to master.

@the guy: for practice, try to keep things simple. I personally love to create things in black and white to get down proper contrasts. Color can be added later in the process. Only if I'm exactly sure about the hues, I'll start in color.
Regarding the pics, try nailing down the shapes before getting into detail. And by "detail", I mean different levels of detail. Apply basic lights and shadows, then get a finer and finer brush to start making it pop.
Another thing to keep it mind: different detail-densities. When you draw over an existing image (especially noticeable with Louis and Woody), try to adjust the densities. Yours are fairly underdetailed, so the original parts are sticking out.
Bonus: use natural colors, not eye-piercing, fully saturated ones ;)

That's just re-coloring, 2mns with photofilter will do the work. I meant to make new facepic, not to re-color from the existing ones.

I'll leave the recolor complaining for the others (one may recolor if he wishes), but could you please upload them as *.png ? They, especially count woody look bad, which is the curse of *.jpg

Yea, use GIMP rather than paint. And remember not to use fully saturated colors (LIKE THIS), but something (LIKE THIS), just in case you didn't understand what BP said.
