I'm sorry if I offended you, I actually thought about that and no I can't think of any (good) solution for the problem with Z-Axis, But filters could be applied that Turn some of the pixels black #000000 giving them a transparent effect.
For Z-axis I can think of two quick Fixes so the chacaters 3d will not be silly
1. The easy one is to make all the levels too thin to allow Z-axis Movement.
2. The Hard way- Create two separate sprite sheets one with only red Channel, one with only blue and Green Channels, Then in DC Make it so every time the character moves into the foreground they become further apart, and everytime the character moves into the background the images move closer together. A problem I can forsee is that When the Character Reaches the bottom or top of the screen it would be difficult to make the 3d effects stop, also if you stood against a rock and tried to keep moving it would also keep splitting and combining.
Edit: If this was done both layers of the Character would have to be transparent.
Edit2: I know this would be difficult but I don't think it would be impossible, If it is someone tell me.
Edit3: I forgot to put link to bambooris cool transparency filters http://www.lf-empire.de/forum/showthread.php?tid=398
