Good Proportions Advice
#1
Well, I saw so many new spriters do sprites with bad proportions. Maybe I'm the only one knowing this secret, or maybe not. Xd

Well, I don't use GIMP anymore so I don't know if GIMP has this tool or not. As for Photoshop, whenever you think your sprite is in a very very bad proportions, use Liquify(Ctrl + Shift + X). There, the first tool should be the Meshing tool. This is the secret of remaking good proportions.(Well, for those who never use this tool, I recommend you play with it for a few minutes). Ok, I'll show some examples by meshing from very bad proportions sprite to a nice proportion style.(Well, I'm not gonna do the detailed shading or bla bla bla).

Oh, and zoom when you mesh. :D

That's it for this thread, hope new spriters who have Photoshop learn something new.

BTW, read online sketching tuts or templates and try sketching anyone FULL body, as time and effort pass by, you will make a sprite that no one dares to say he has bad proportions.

Well, thanks for you advice and i appreciate the fact that you came forward with a vision to help the newbie spriters.
But, to be honest i don't find your advice useful because:-
1) The newbie sprites which do not have photoshop like me will not be able to follow your advice.
2) Simply a mesher tool in photoshop won't make proportions better for us. Proportions are something which we newbies will have to learn by spending our time and by practising making them. There is no such tool in any latest or previous version of photoshop that will make better proportions for us.

The problem with the Liquify-tool is that the sprites will either become blurry or "watery" (which is pretty much why the filter is called that way). One would have to overpaint the problem-zones to get back the sharpness. And then, you could also just start out with a new document, draw a template and color that one. Might be much easier to get the proportions correctly. Also, it doesn't really give you the LF2-proportions; it just gives you an approximation. When I take off my glasses, the images look pretty much undistinguishable (but that might also be related to the fact that I'm half-blind :p).

The Liquify-tool is a good method to fix small flaws but it'd be way too much effort to fix a disproportioned sprite. Much quicker to redraw it entirely :p

I don't know, but it works fine with me, if it blurs, then just fix it a bit, wouldn't cost more than 10 minutes, would it? Besides, who would make a full sprite sheet THEN go with mesh? Normally, I sprite an unshaded sprite >> Mesh >> Shade >> Resize.
Guess this didn't help much. :(
