Hey, that's a pretty neat way of doing it!
The only thing is that the attacks don't quite look like template itself :P

it neednt look like template, this is a tutorial for making NEW templates.

wow, pretty cool alternative to just overpainting everything in a new layer, which could become pretty annoying if you do it for all sprites...
btw, I was just messing around with a character with the overpainting-method... can you guess who that was?
   

anyways, your method has its advantages and disadvantages...
adv: fast & multiple sprites at once
dis: ability to control not too good... (look at the legs for example)
