Transperancy of Sprites

when making a sprite transperant from the background, is there a way where you can easily make it transparent (preferably in photoshop) so that there are no pixels in the background?

how stupid of me, the whole time i was erasing the background of the sprites with the background eraser tool :P

i always have the bg on a layer and the sprite on separate layers too, this way i can easily disable the bg-layer if i wish to have no background. Easy as that.
