This is more general, but you could fix it on individual characters:
Item picking. The duality of attacking and picking with the same button may be a great simple feature, fair enough - but it can easily turn fights into tiptoeing around items as you try to lure your opponent into picking something and using the gap to attack (while cautiously avoiding the item yourself). I don't like how this double function of the attack key turns items that are supposed to act like power ups into traps you are trying to avoid or abuse. Besides bottle hogging it's the only reason they are annoying.
