The gambler is really good actually, although, I'd like to point out - the reason he's considered ugly in your opinion is his upturned nose. It's too high on his head and points directly upwards, if you angled it more towards the perpendicular (90 degrees to the face) it'd be better.

I would say a bit too much of the folds, but other than that it's really good. Maybe add a few different styles of folds in the clothing, it would add a bit of difference to the picture.
The reason you think the holding of the bow is wrong is because it is. He needs to have the part the arrow is resting on slightly upwards rather than downwards, as you've angled it in this picture. It wants to be angled in the reverse that you've already got it.
