However, the effect doesn't look right

That's because his hand is at 90 degrees, which is impossible if he's sliding. It should be at at least 45 in the opposite direction of his movement to feel anything close to natural.

Also I'm a bit confused about the cloud. If he's sliding then I'd think it would be a dust cloud. Maybe it's blue fairy-dust?
In any case, once the cloud is animated properly it should look much better. I would suggest not making it as a whole though. Better make it into smaller clusters.
