Whilst this might be true to a certain extend, I highly doubt that his calves are really thing ellipsoids when viewed from above :P
Yeh, it's okay to have a slight difference, but try to minimize that one a little. If you have seen the older Asterix-movies, you'll probably know this guy:

try to vary brush sizes. Do the blocking-ins with a 9px-brush, the first-level-detail with a 5px one, the secondary details with a 3px-brush (the effect looks as if it's made with that one), and for tertiary details a 1px-brush. Also, try to work a little bit on glowy effects. As an example, study Julian's run-attack. It features a similar energy-outburst
