Ah, nailed it one, dear friend!

IMO this is a bit of a silly question, because people vote for the sprites they think are best! Why else would they vote?
People go for the most epic/aesthetically pleasing sprite, and usually not on practicality (view apocs sprites if you want an impractical LF2 char ;D)
