So, does the stage mode follow some (rough) storyline?
Are there ordinary enemies in the stages as well (useless bandits for example), or is it just boss and minions?
The road-stage doesn't look that good, I think the marking stripes destroy the perspective.
Also the guardrail doesn't fade into the darkness, unlike the road itself.
Here, I did a quick edit. (I couldn't really do the fade-effect, because I'm lacking in software right now)

Left side - no stripes
Right side - straight stripes
Why does the coliseum have no "borders" on its sides, like the normal VS background?
Will you add more of these background-connections? (Like the broken highway in the forrest, for example)
I think it would really help to blend the substages together if you'd add road signs, or even the skyscrapers in the distance in the beginning of 2-1.
