Wait, does that mean that for this tournament we must choose & play with 7 different characters, or did you mean in the single match we both cannot play with the same character?

A single round consists of 5 fights with your opponent. During those 5 fights, you must switch characters; the char-set you picked in round X is independent from the one in round Y, though.
