So most likely the problem existed pre 2.0 as well, thought of that? You make it sound like because 1.9c didn't support mirror files the problem shouldn't occur.

Also what's the big deal with creating mirror sprites - you do it once and then you're done. (Even if you do it only after finishing all the sprites.)

You need to have the mirror files. That's the point of the mirror files. The mirror files exist as a solution to the problem.
