If I remember correctly, Photoshop introduced the Auto-Save-Feature in CS5(?), so you might want to check if that's selected already.

Either way, that behavior is weird. PS is one of the most stable applications I have ever used (then again, I have no idea what they added past CS3 :p), so that save-bug might not necessarily be due to PS but rather windows itself; that it locked your HD or something like that. I'm just postulating, though...
