I remember at one point these rights were what prevented a sequel to LF2 and had Marti move on to Hero Fighter.

Exciting news I guess, but not really blown away by the remastered sprites so far tbh
Was not a fan of the SF2 remaster for the same reason. The artwork/ designs always tend to loose their charm for me when blown up and redrawn this way. Gad & YinYin (on Patreon) have some good points there.

Concerning U1 technology. They still owed the rights a few months ago when I was still in talks with them about buying them/ getting the license to work out something concerning a Little Fighter sequel (with the idea to get Marti on board too then). Was in contact with them for quite some time and am pretty sure they have no desire to ever let go of them. According to them, they also own the LF1, LF2 designs & names - next to LFO obviously.

Didn't further pursue anything with them (or him- as there is always only one person responding) for the sole reason that the demands they put forward concerning creative control, especially on designs were beyond ridiculous to me. The name of that potential sequel was also set by them and had to include LFO - clearly a fan favorite.

So yes, it would be interesting to hear Marti's side here and about the legal aspects. Either Oscar (from U1) is in on this with him, or there is some mix up concerning the right situation, or Marti doesn't care about being sued for using his past work that he sold.

Either way I hope Marti can live up to this and has fun with it.
Will be closely following the remaster of the game that partly made me go into gamedev.
