Hmm, don't do the flames in a pattern. They must look kinda random to give them a more natural look. I've been doing the fire-frames a few days ago, and here's the result of it:
It's basically just a bunch of brushing with different blendings and opacities with a dark red and an orange tone.
I know, it's far away from being lf2-styled but good enough, I think. As your char doesn't look 100% lf2-like, it's ok to make his fire-sprites a little different. Just one thing to add to your sprite: some lighter colors, a light-yellow/orange should fit quite well as a highlighter
