This morning, as I was walking my usual route, a strange new scent appeared. There was no doubt that it was a vampire since I’ve already learned the smell of their blood. Yet something was different about this one; couldn’t quite put my finger on it. Even so, I continued to my destination trying not to regard it. As I was getting closer to the river, the scent was becoming stronger. Why did it bother me so much? It wouldn’t be the first time I meet a child of the night. Soon I heard ripples of rushing water and reached the small river. Now I was certain about my specters as I saw a human-like figure kneeling at the bank, slowly taking the water and splashing it over the face. Suddenly the figure stood up and froze, a sure sign that it has discovered. Seeing that battle was inevitable, I slowly revealed myself from the shrubs. The vampire turned to face me and I realized why the scent was so different: it was a female. Never before have had I attacked a woman, vampire or not. The whole thing was against the old ways - my ways. Unfortunately there didn’t seem to be much choice. She grimed unveiling her fangs, forcing me to quickly pace forwards and pull out my knife in the process. While noticing her strange green eyes for a moment I let my guard down, give her an opportunity to dodge. The fight soon started to unfold, and yet all I could think about were my morals I was forswearing. The stitched scar on the right eye was hinting that she had battled before, while during our confrontation she shown skill equal to mine. Thinking about the scar postulated my next mistake. While I was lost in thought, she cleverly attacked from the rear and cut me in the lower arm. Losing control over my notions, all I wanted was for the battle to end. Looking deeper into her emerald eyes I ascertained myself that this was the right choice. Perform what would have seemed as a strike, I fell over the bank into the cold river, thus losing the battle. She did not follow me downstream, so I got out of the water and slowly went home thinking about nothing else but the scar on her face…

Still wet from falling into the river during my last battle, slowly I paced towards my now called home. The deep wound on my lower arm wasn’t bleeding anymore, though I still felt pain. Suddenly, just like before my last battle, I smelled the same scent. There was no doubt that it was another female vampire. Quietly I turned around; wanting to walk the other way. It was too late: she appeared right in front of me. As I went for my knife, she pushed me backwards, throwing me a whole meter into the grass. Her piercing green eyes and fangs like glistening ivory immediately reminded me of my last opponent. Yet she was much stronger then her - definitely not my league. I tried to get up only to find myself scattered into a boulder. Shivering I tried to get up, but my wound started bleeding again, intensifying the pain. Then happened something I would have never expected: she left. A completely unexplainable event. Why would someone clearly loyal to the vampires leave me be? Could she have felt pity? Was I not enough of a challenge for her in order to enter battle…? That was it: I wasn’t a challenge. I was nothing compare to her and she probably didn’t want to waste time. Now that I pulled myself together I wonder… try to understand this world’s rules… There doesn’t seem to be any logic in them. At first I thought that the weak perish where the strongest prevail, but now I’m confused by this gesture of my so-called enemy. This was but another strange hap for this unbalanced reality.

As I was taking a walk near the cliffs I suddenly realized this change in the air. Quickly I jumped to the side, barley dodging the sharp blade. The next attack was so fast that my sword slipped out of my hands while repelling it. After being hardly wounded in the leg, the situation became clear – once again I was way out of my league. This vampire wasn’t like the others I faced. The battle that occurred was more of a game for this one, watching my pointless attempts to resist. Completely perchance I slashed my sword, cutting a deep wound in the vampire’s upper arm. This useless act was nothing more than a last minute fluke and all it did was make him even more raged. As he gone berserk there was a change in his fighting style. He became distracted and rapidly missed his every charge. This was an opportunity I foolishly tried to use to attack him instead of running away. The fist assails were successful, but then everything gone from bad to worse. Although unaware of what exactly he was doing, his strength still surpassed mine. He kept ramming into me, savagely ripping my leg open. As the intense pain became unbearable, I accepted that there was no way to defeat this opponent – this now showing monster. Repelling his last assault, I readily jumped down the steep slope, sliding down to safety. Leaning back onto a tree I listened to the violent cries while the vampire was striking thin air as if fighting against an army. This sight reminded me of how my rage got the best of me once, turning me into a wild beast. Although he was my enemy I still felt pity towards him.
“Rage is a terrible thing that always spawns a monster” toppling my ears I walked away from the screams, feeling nothing else but pain – both in my leg and my heart…
