The head is well done, seriously.
Outlines and proportions are (imo) right, too (i think the hands are intended to be big).
However, the (from our view) right arm is way to dark shaded and the grey thingy he is wearing doesn't have any shafing at all, same goes for his legs.
For a first sprites this one is surely acceptable and the head surely rocks
