New bot flood
#11
@Reaper- it shouldn't be done, though. a) not all bots have a year b) not all bots have one-sentence sigs c) some users might want to do that (add year after name).
So that's quite a lot of exceptions.
Maybe like a reverse Captcha? type the reverse of what's shown in the box.

Would anyone be so bold as to code one of these endless options you keep giving.
The problem with having these idea's is that no one is able to actually execute them, if you could and prove they work, then it'll be all well... but have any of you tried?

Personally, I'm more in support of the 4 digit ending. People are more likely to put 2k10 or 2k11 then they are 2010 or 1991 at the end of their username. Bots would be caught without really acknowledging it.

An anti-bot method I have noticed on another forum I frequent is a little addition of an easy question during the signup. Something that is random.

I am not sure how hard this would be to achieve (or if it would work at all), but you could introduce random questions with incorrect answers. These answers could be placed with the rules on the site. ;)

for example:
1+1=fish

Something random like that.

But then again, the bots could be using a different method.... Perhaps looking through the source code of the web page?

I don't know... But that is my .02$.

As for the four digits thing, that might work as well. You just need to add a special note to the sign up page for when you are creating your username.

I am currently studying PHP for a short quiz so they could implement it on the sign-up page

(edit)
Here was my first attempt to solve it...still working on it (with dad)

@Eddie
mods won't do it unless we give/create them the code...

Guys, if I'm right this is the answer for you all
Teh Guy Wrote:Finding the corresponding code isn't that hard. Just recently, I have spent two nights on creating a functioning captcha. Everything is possible with the right amount of work. However, it does require tons of work and bug-testing which is a good reason for "No.".

It was discussed some time already and knowing that
Teh Same Teh Guy Wrote:a) You are discussing this in a public section
b) We have a good and active forum team that loves to ban bots
c) The amount of bots that have joined in the last month has dramatically gone down
d) Your suggestion require not only a lot of work but a metric crapton of work. You know the result already.
e) To sum it up: No.
I don't think it has to be discussed again.

And as long as I'm here, I can ban every bot I see in my horizon (?), that doesn't give me any weight.
I would also be pleased if I won't see any of these 'TOO MUTCH BOTS OMFG' threads (except, of course, threads about how awesome are moderators who ban bots ;D).

ok i dont plan to read through all this, but I also saw the large number of new bots in here.

Actually we use a new captcha plugin since the original one didnt help well, but on most of the other mybb-Forums I know including the support forum, they simply dont have as hard problems with bots as we have.

So I turned off the captcha-plugin we use and now we use the original ones - so lets keep an eye on the bots the next days, if it`s still bad like now I`ll see what I can do more.

Hey MH, can you somehow make it possible to mass ban members?
like have a check box next to their name (like post moderation) and have a ban all?
just wonderin'
