SURPRISE CHRISTMAS UPDATE!!
Back at the intersection, Bamboori takes the lead and heads into the east corridor. In the distance, he sees a brightly blueish blazing blissfully blinding blossom blanket. Or that is what he believes. It's simply an enlightened room with blue torches on the walls. Although it is a rather large room, it seems completely empty.
Bamboori: This is peculiar.
SirFrog: Look, there is some kind of stairway in the center!
Bamboori: This might be a way that leads us to the lower floor!
Nave: Or it might be a trap, splashing blue liquid.
Blue Phoenix: This door doesn't deserve to exist in this shallow world. TAKE IT DOWN!
Simon: Just a second, I'll help you this time, we won't be getting nowhere else.
Blue Phoenix and Simon rush at the door and throw themselves onto it with all their might. (STR Threshold: 95-3*STR Modifier, 1-200) (STR Roll: 28) The door doesn't budge. Simon and Blue Phoenix are thrown back by their force. In the meantime, Drahcir enters the other adjacent room and finds a large, nearly empty room that is lit by a handful of blue torches on the walls.
Blue Phoenix: Well, sh*t!
Simon: Either we leave for the room immediately, or those gargoyles are going to catch up with us and tear us apart. I believe.

SURPRISE UPDATE!!
Bamboori and the others head to the stairs and slowly descend them into a room that looks like an identical copy of the one above it. Then Bamboori makes out a few voices not very far from the stairs.
Bamboori: That sounds like Simon! Let's check that corridor out!
As soon as they start running towards the corridor the voices come from, all the torches in the room start to flicker. It goes unnoticed first, but a few steps on the torches nearly go out. Bamboori stops before he reaches the corridor.
Bamboori: This doesn't seem natural.
SirFrog: Not only that - I feel the earth shaking a little.
From the end of the corridor in front of them, they see Drahcir, Blue Phoenix, Simon and Phil coming their way, running. Just a moment before they reach the other half of the group, a powerful tremor shakes the ground, wiping the whole group from their feet, causing them to drop to the floor. The torches keep flickering and an unnatural high-pitched sound starts penetrating into the group's ears. The ground keeps shaking and the sound's amplitude increases with each second. One by one the group members start covering their ears with their hands.
Nave: What... is this... shi... t...
snorsorbet: I can't... move...
SirFrog: This feeling... is unnatural. That must be... dark magic...
Slowly they feel a mental cloak of darkness descending onto them as the torches go out. Consciousness fades.
Blue Phoenix: Is this... the end...?

???: Heh heh heh.

...
Blue Phoenix raises his eyelids instantly. He sees nothing.
???: Ho ho ho.
The noise and the weird feeling are gone. Blue Phoenix sits up.
???: I see I have intruders.
Blue Phoenix: Who are you? Show yourself!
In a sudden moment the torches light up, the same eerie blue as previously. Blue Phoenix instinctively covers his eyes before the brightness of the light sets his eyes ablaze.
???: Welcome to the Cold Caverns. This is my home.
This voice doesn't hail naturally from this room, but it almost seems to be projected into their heads. Blue Phoenix (his eyes now used to the light) looks around. They are still in the same room, however the passage and the stairs seem to have disappeared. The others are spread throughout the room, some still unconscious.
???: You have intruded my habitat despite the grave warning I had posted outside.
Blue Phoenix: So what!
???: Therefore, I may now do with you as I please.
SirFrog: I'm not sure what you're driving at, but I'm sure we can solve this peacefully without the need for bloodshed.
Nave: Or brainshed - *shudder*
???: *chuckles*
Blue Phoenix: ...
???: I will let you go under one condition.
There's a dramatic pause. Blue Phoenix and the others get up on their feet, yet find themselves unable to move away from their current position.
???: Amuse me.
The next dramatic pause.
Blue Phoenix: And how exactly will we do that?
???: Let's play a little game. I call it... Frozen Emblem.
SirFrog: That doesn't sound very promising...
As if it were a cue the floor starts trembling. In the center of the room, a handful of ice gargoyles start to materialize in front of the group's eyes, their movement still impaired by the spell. Blue Phoenix's heart starts to race. So what if they can't move...
???: This will resemble chess a little. You will take turns attacking your enemies. May your skulls be crushed. I will be merciful and let you start the battle.

Okay first some questions... unluckily I never played any Fire Emblem game so I might not be that pro at making up strategys this time...
first question would be, by "a player chooses to move up to a handful of squares (only in cardinal directions) on the map" do you mean that we can only move in a straight line, f.e. only 4 squares to the left... or is it possible to go two down and one right and one down again or whatever, like split it up? second question, about ranged attacks, can they only be used in cardinal directions aswell or can I also attack an enemy that's positioned two squares north and one west of me with a range greater than 2? and last question, are those gargoyles ranged or meele or aren't we supposed to know that yet? (because technically our characters fought them before and should know how they attacked, but since we have no visualisations of those fights and it wasn't said in the previous posts, I don't actually know wether they attacked us from range or not)

ad 1) The only restriction is that you cannot move diagonal, otherwise you can move as you wish, ie up up left, or left up up (which would in this case result in the same spot anyway)
ad 2) the range from ranged attacks can be used to attack an enemy as per movement in square distance (so as you described it would work)
ad 3) standard attack of most enemies are melee, I believe they did cast ice ball or breath of ice once or twice, 'ball' spells mostly have some range and attacks that hit multiple enemies in this combat style will hit all enemies in a radius around you
Hope this clears it up |

holy cow batman!
moving 4 up and 1 right, then double arrowing I4
will we see more of this battle system later? ;D
edit: Ramond told me via Skype that we can split our move points into different directions, so moving in different directions is possible.
id love to see some special abilities later liek moving/attacking diagonally and stuff
