For now, try to omit any effects until you feel comfortable with creating sprites that can hold up without any effects. Those effects distract and help hiding flaws, so keeping them out will automatically help spotting mistakes ;)

more contrast in face, work little on hair..try make sprite in 200% if you want ;)
