I recommend THIS Guide for basic char bases and then the various other guides in the same tutorial section. Read them, they are quite helpful.

Regarding the sprite... Try again after reading the tutorial. ^^'
My first thoughts: Can 3 years old childs register on this forum? No, seriously, even i can sprite better... and i suck at spriting o.o

Well, at least you know they're bad. :P But seriously, everyone's first try turns out bad (or average, to the least). Other than tutorials, you could look at other peoples sprites, take ideas on shading and such.

id recommend to redraw over bases instead of starting from scratch.
