A message from 1477
#1
I've been in contact with him regarding work on the Forum Mod ( °[]° )
and he gave me this message to give to you guys...

1477 Wrote:Dear LFE,

I sincerely apologize for posting Tomny's code on LFE without remembering to accredit him for his work. I would really like a chance to explain myself.

In doing so, I would like to discuss a few things regarding that post:

1) At the time of the post, I had merely wanted to share an "experiment" that I was in the middle of developing at the time. I had no intention of claiming any sort of credit for coding the EXE, but was merely interested in showing to the forum the capabilities of the Frame 799 and the 100 Itr EXEs combined together in the modern 2.0a engine. I had no wish for personal reputation on the forum (the rep system had deleted), so there really was no personal gain in trying to take credit for Tomny's code. I merely wanted the forum to see that such a combination was possible, and on the most recent engine (there had been many compatibility issues between the different engine versions at the time).

2) I had no idea of the commotion or response that the thread would receive (not that it had received much in the end). It mostly died out after less than 15 responses (I made sure that I was near the last to reply). Nevertheless, Tomny responded to the thread two months later, claiming that I had merely copied his coding onto v2.0a (which is not entirely true) and had done it incorrectly. I have only recently discovered that post, probably because it fell under the pile of question threads that many new coders were posting by the time I logged in again at around March 2010. Had he PMed me instead of grave-digging up the thread a few months later (when I had become inactive and not expectant of any more responses from that particular thread), I would have gladly added his name to the credits list (as I have done in the past with Silva in my own question threads with "test EXEs", and the careful listing of all members on the forum mod EXE). There are just so many people that have contributed to the modding of the engine that accrediting them all would be difficult.

3) I am not one to steal others' work. I have accredited Silva for his work every time that I made a public DLL contribution to the forum. Not remembering to include Tomny was truly my mistake, and I apologize for it.

4) Again, I would like to spend this entire point on apologizing to Tomny for forgetting to mention his name in my post. I know it is a little to late to amend things, but he never attempted to contact me and request his name be added on (even though I linked my email on my bio page). I would like to amend things with Tomny myself, but since he is also an inactive member, I would like to settle for the next best thing - attempting to show myself as an honest coder in the LFE society.

5) Lastly, I hope that Tomny will read this and accept my apology. Those of you that know his email address or a way of reaching him directly, please send him this message. He has truly pioneered many great features for us in the LF2 modding community.

I, for one, am at heart only a Data Changer. I started a DCer and shall finish (if ever) as a DCer. My main skill and contribution to the forum is to logically edit/modify and combine others' works (as DCers have done to Marti and Starsky's original data) to best fit the players' (and in this case the other modders') needs.

If I have ever claimed credit it is only for implementation, not pure creation.

Conclusion: I would like to sincerely apologize a third time for any inconveniences, hurt feelings, or angry tears that have gone on as a result of my post on that EXE. I have been in the community for a long time, and therefore know to respect others' works. Honestly, not crediting Tomny was a mistake that I committed in my rush at the time to share the EXE. In return, I simply request the chance to clear my name. Really, I had only meant well, and wanted to share the results of my experimentation instead of archiving/keeping it in order to better convenient the DCers (and especially those creating mods) that were having hard time fitting everything under roof, so to speak. I had definitely not meant to keep any of the credit to myself. If I shall ever have the chance, I would gladly accredit and thank Tomny for making such an amazing engine a reality for all of us.

Thank you all for reading.

Yeah...raping his rank, post and signature was a bit too much, I agree.
He's been a good and smart member as I remember, couldn't he be exonerated or something?

A few things to note for those curious as to exactly what have happened.

A couple of weeks ago Silva spotted a thread in the Chinese section of the official forums where Tomny posted in bold and red letters saying that people from LFE are thieves, hence would never visit LFE again. Due to my massive stretch of inactivity, I have failed to notice it in the first place, else I would have taken action much earlier.

Silva messaged me and told me how upset he his, fearing he may have released something but forgotten to credit Tomny as Tomny is definitely the best HEX-er the Chinese community has to offer. Just an example of his latest accomplishments, he has managed to bully LF2 into loading mirror images automatically even if they didn't exist in the first place; the usage of png files and change the fps of LF2 into 60. In terms of LF2 modding in the HEX field, he is without a doubt one of those that pushes the boundaries and has earned much respect across the community.

As administrator of the Official forums and the main PR staff of LFE, I launched an investigation upon notification and communicated with Tomny, who told me the Itr Limit 100 was a copy of his code (the rest he didn't check), though 1477 missed out on copying a few bits and bobs, so if you are using that dll framework, the itr limit is still the usual 5. Though not familiar with HEX myself, I am certain, as a DC-er that any coder can recognise his own code and there's no reason to doubt him.

I am sure all of you would know that copying without crediting others is considered as a reprehensible act by the LFE staff. Some may comment on the severity of this particular incident, though I have to stress that LFE's reputation has been severely damaged among the Chinese community. Most of you probably would not care, but LFE does pride itself as an international site and would avoid at all costs to be associated with the likes of LF2 Global and other inconsiderate modders. Furthermore, this has also impeded the development of HEX due to the break in communication.

As for the direct contact question posed by 1477, Tomny is actually from Taiwan and his mother tongue is Chinese. I can assure you that 95% of the Chinese population in the world cannot speak English and would panic when the language is mentioned. To come here and post his findings is actually a rather rare and even brave action, though HEX is arguably another language thus allowing him to break through conventional barriers. Looking at the whole forum, only BuXie is the other user from Taiwan and he too, only posts sparingly and seldom replies to his own threads. Complaining is effort already. Complaining in another language is double the effort. To track someone down and complain to him personally is quadruple the effort while he has done nothing wrong in the first place.

That being said, I appreciate 1477's apology and I would certainly relay this message to Tomny.

I had no idea that "艾爾卡特" was a member of LFE. Ive been gone a bit too long to notice.
I have been using his EXE since he created it and i believe he wrote that message in June, But i didnt translate it when i saw it.
Those on my MSN may or may not of seen the bitmap changes i did to it
This is the image edits before i lost all my data.
Anyone who has been in contact with me about a year ago probably knows that Ive been making my mod using his EXE cause it has everything i wanted in it.
Though i didnt realize someone posted it here. I'm more active on the official site than LFE. been using translators on the chinese forum to try to atleast make myself clear (Though GUNOFDIS and Marshall usually translates my english to them.)

Of course he was gonna be credited when i actually released a beta. His knowledge and work with the HEX really inspired me with new ideas for LF2 by increasing the limitations of it. (Frames, Musics, BG animations, PNG format, etc.)
I hope the chinese community understands and accepts 1447's apology.

I didn't know the situation either tbh. ^^;

But from what it sounds like, the best way to amend the situation would be
to translate the apology into Chinese and post it on the Chinese boards...

If there's a translator on the boards I'd probably need an account to get to
it... I'll work on it tomorrow.
Trust you're all well.
