Mmm... My opinion does not define the rules but I think the point was to sprite a main/protagonist character and some kind of minion/friend/animal/whatever as some kind of support character. What you want to do is more like a 'group' sprite. I think you should stick to one main char and one companion... or maybe two of the last, but not more.
I guess most people will agree because quality>>>quantity regarding this kind of contest, and I bet it's gonna play against you with the judges' rule. What I am trying to say is that if you make 5 sprites, and 2 of them are really crappy, regardless of how superb the other 3 are, you're gonna get a low rating, so you better stick with just two and polish them a lot.

Just a suggestion, perhaps you should have a third judge so the judges themselves may enter the contest. It does not have to happen for this contest, but perhaps for a future one
Judge A participates > B and C only judge the sprite
Judge B participates > A and C only judge the sprite
Judge C participates > A and B only judge the sprite
Also a grading system could be established in order to provide common ground for each judge to "grade" each sprite.
Each sprite could be judged by 3 different categories coming together for a total score.
Professionalism/Quality: graded out of 10
Creativity/Innovation: out of 5
Theme Relativity: out of 5
The judges come together and average their scores for each sprite.
Just a few thoughts.
My entry will be up as soon as I finish it.
