ok, i think that the first thing you need is a good program to make sprite(photoshop, gimp and smthin like them......)
for start i think you should remake chars by using them as a base, for shading you can find some tuts that will tich you, here: http://www.lf-empire.de/forum/forum-16.html
i think you can get help from others if they can help, there are lots of spriters better then me here.........
