Australia was discovered 40k-140k years ago by Aborigines, there wasn't much more finding-out before that time :P

Speaking of biggest island, it was probably Pangea, although it has never been discovered. Technically it was still larger :P

Actually I mean the time before James Cook (I think?) sailed to Australia in 1770.

By the way, big hint. The answer still is the biggest island today.
