Well, covering doesn't efficiently work in limited space. Since covering only accounts for melee attacks, you'd have to move into the melee space to cover him (removing him from the melee space). Otherwise, always check this http://www.vertigofx.com/jrkstudios/rpg/ out, all of your skills are mentioned under your character status page, and their effect on the Spells page.

It doesn't make any sense. You can depict covering as standing in front of the person you are covering. Obviously, he'll be behind you and not able to melee attack. Covering in the back rows is absolutely no use because everybody can be targeted by ranged attacks. In the melee row, covering could still work. Anyway, let's not get technical here.
