Actually it's an important point. Michael won't help you by himself, he is too... simple-minded for that. As well, what if there's a zombie on the attic. If you open the hatch by prying it open with your staff that would make more noise then stepping on something and then doing it by hand.
And damn you for rolling a 20 right away!
Utilizing his metal rod as lever, Sam has no difficultys prying the hatch open, causing it to open downwards. There's an extendable ladder attached to hatch and whilst it looks old, it may be solid enough for one person to climb upwards at a time.

Given the pile of clothes on top of the person, Jonny has a hard time figuring out whether the someone is breathingly alive or just a corpse.
As he gets closer, however, the person below the rags suddenly starts moving, getting up with slow, sluggish movements whilst groaning weakly.
Jonny freezes in his motion and waits for the person to get up, at which point some of the rags will hopefully fall and reveal the person's skin color. Nevertheless he keeps holding the calculator tight in his hand.

Oh noes, mein evil planz was discoverred!
Climbing up the ladder proves little problems to the trained body of Sam. Passing the hatch, he indeed finds himself in some sort of shallow-roofed attic. It's extremely dark in here, and anything past two meters from the hatch disappears into shadows.

It's more of a feeling forward then actual investigation. Using his keen senses permits Sam nontheless to figure out the room is maybe five by ten meters, filled with a few chests and crates, probably a storage room.
