Looks like I'm a little slow with replying (*looking into his PM inbox rolleyes*)
Well, somehow the hair was a little too less detailed for me, so I tried myself doing something with the sprite. Hope you like it ;)

You won't get a pm, I'll make it public. Have fun.

1) Imagine where the light source comes from. On a new layer (so that it'll get easier to remove it later), draw something to symbolize the source. A sun-like thing would do it. Even a stupid dot.

2) Select the black part which should be transparent. Now, invert the selection (Ctrl+Shift+I). This is to prevent any graphical problems in-game later. Press Ctrl+H in order to hide the flashy selection lines, they're just distracting.

3) Now, take the basic color of your hair (I presume that the hair has only one color at the moment). Go to the top of PS, set the opacity of the brush to something around 8% and the mode to "linear dodge". As a brush, select the fuzzy 9px one.

4) At the outside parts, highlight every part of the hair the light source "shines" at. You can go over these parts multiple times, just don't exaggerate.

5) Change the brush mode to "multiply" instead of linear dodge. Now, darken all outer parts that are "in the shadow". By now you should have brighter and darker parts outside and the inner part has still the regular basic color.

6) Time to get into details. Change the brush opacity to 15-20% (just to speed things up), make the brush mode "linear dodge" again, set the size to 1px, and go nuts. Draw seemingly random lines. It'll eventually look like you have something "hairy" where you want to have it.

7) Just to complete it and bring in a little more brightness range, set your brush to "multiply" and repeat the procedure. Don't exaggerate this time, we need the bright parts, too. If you feel like you're done with this step, then there's just one thing left to say: congratz, you're done :)

honestly, it's self-explanatory. There's nothing that you can't understand. There's just stuff that you have to read second time with Photoshop on your hand to follow these steps. I can't help you with that.
