The chance thingys just went into the rules after the game was to simple: Everyone defending himself or getting defended survived, everyone else got instantly (1 in the first round, 2 in the 2nd etc) infected... Then nothing happened anymore...
The chances aren't as evil or complex as they look, really ^^
