WELL,
i have received quite a lot of PM's from people asking me to either help them with spriting or to ask me how i do mine
SO i have decided to type up a guide to help YOU become a better spriter
these are what you always need for spriting or anything:
1) you need to be patient! if you cant get the look you want for your sprite, keep trying!
2) PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!! its how you get anywhere! probably the most important of them all
3) an active imagination!!! originality is the key!
4) able to take criticism, and other comments on your works, and use them to improve
5) be a perfectionist! every little detail does count in the end! try to notice the small little details, because it will be worth it!
these are also what you need:
1) a good spriting program. i use photoshop, but gimp can get good results too. you can even use paint! (i used to!)
2) pen & paper! draw your creations first if you want to get a nice look
3) scanner to put your drawings on the computer, so you can colour them!
steps:
1) draw a character body shape, anyone can draw, but drawing well is hard, so PRACTICE
Additional: if you are having trouble, use template for your body shape drawing, and colour it in, but draw a different stance to fit you chars' style. dont use templates original stance!
2) once you have finished the basic shape, you can add stuff to it!
here is where originality comes into play. dont just give them a shirt, pants and shoes, give them some accessories, like a scarf, or gloves, or a weapon of some description
Additional: hair is a tricky part, dont copy and paste, try draw a new shape with a 1px brush, and fill it in!
Additional2 dont use other chars as a base, use them as a guide to get your proportions right! look at them, dont sprite over them!
3) advice, unless you truely think it looks good, put energy glows around the hands. most of the time i would recommend against it!
4) colour! try not to use bright colours, or the preset colours, try to think realistic about what real-life colours look like.
Advice: try not to recolour existing sprites, because a new sprite will look better!
5) SHADING!!! this is a VERY important part of you character! this makes you char more 3D instead of a flat picture! to find a lighter/darker colour, use the colour navigator, i wouldnt use the burn and dodge tool
6) that should be finished now, and hopefully your char looks epic! try do more in different stances, or different actions to fill your sprite sheet.
if you want further support on your sprites, post them for people to critic your sprites so you can improve and become a jolly good spriter!
search around for tutorials on spriting, there are more then plenty, so they should help you too!
(i may regret saying this, but) if you think your sprite looks good, that's good enough for me
i hope i have helped you!
