What do you think of SOPA and PIPA?
#1
Kinda surprised, that I didn't see such a thread.

Anyway, with many websites and webusers demonstrating their opinions against SOPA and PIPA, I thought it would be interesting to hear the opinions on this forum, should it pass or not.

I don't understand protect IP / SOPA clearly......................
Are they different things or synonyms? lolol..
Can you explain with easier words?

I only understand that US government is trying to stop piracy across the internet by blocking the infringing websites?

Well, I agree with the effort to stop copyright infringements, but that is not like blocking YouTube because they have pirated contents.. that will eliminate nearly all uploading places just because some people infringe copyrights :0 .

I think its bad for a lots of reason. Blocking a site if small part of site contain some copyright stuff or a link to copyright contant.

This is kinda of a heavy topic. The main reason I'm against is that some capitalist pigs wanna controll the net using copyright as an excuse.

True there a lot of copyright contant on the net being used with no permisson. That does'nt mean they gotta block sites on a whim cause someone post copyright stuff.asking to remove it will be more sain option. As for sites like piratebay should really be down.

I sometimes watch lps or walkthroughs & I heard those might become ileagl due this bill .

January 18th... the most productive day for mankind in the 21st century.

Anyways, whilst I do not want to say that piracy is a good thing, blocking whole websites due to one idiot infringing copyrights is a bit over the top, to say the least. Fully agree with you guys on that. Also, the fact that one single government wants to tackle this is kind of suspicious. I am not into laws or anything, but I'm pretty sure that lobbyists will reserve themselves some loophole to keep their sites (and thus, their business) running. Or they have VERY good lawyers. Either way, shutting down sites such as Google, Facebook, Youtube, Yahoo, Wikipedia, Amazon, Twitter, and whatnot could be a fairly tedious job with quite a bit of public rage...

tl;dr: I'm fairly optimistic that SOPA will not last. Even if they pass the bill, it'll eventually get revoked due to public pressure. <-- My opinion.

I read some stuff there too.

Man, those bloody old swines think they can stop piracy just my passing some silly bill that kinda punishes innocent people. Excellent websites have to be shut down just because some silly old fool posts some pirate stuff there. Why not punish 'em in particular? Its no good idea to have the users of internet picked out. It was always the best idea for the internet to remain free for everyone.

I really agree with the blackout protests for January 18 2012. So, even if LFE has nothing special to do with that bill, I suggest that due to worldwide users visiting this website, blacking it out for a day could be a good form of protest.

Creative Director @ deviantART Wrote:SOPA would allow a company like Nintendo (who supports the bill) to come upon a site like deviantART and decide that it doesn't care for all of the images of its famed character Mario. So it might say "hey, you guys are harboring theft of our content" and would take quick and easy steps to literally shut us down. All because you uploaded an image of Mario. But not just any image of Mario. It could have been any number of images of Mario, starting with the obvious screengrabs from games and extending all the way into personal interpretations of the character as originally drawn by you artists out there.

Websites that were built around the notion of sharing ideas and communications could be shut down at whim, all because users may have referenced something a company thought it owned
~thus making my wip obsolette
~and possibly shutting down/limiting my favorite websites to access from
~totally against this bill!

SOPA and PIPA are two different bills in America but they will do pretty much the same thing:
Block certain websites that are based outside US, and shut down companies within the US.
