Old post:
I discovered a program called Krita. I know the head-developper of the program, he has been working on it for about 10 years. It's professional free-ware. Many great functions are implented and some things work even better than in Photoshop in my opinion. Unfortunately, some functions don't work quite well on Windows and Mac, since it is not done yet and only Linux is working correctly. For those who want to give it a try:

Starting off to really create something might be difficult. Therefor, tutorials might be very helpful: http://krita.org/resources
Here is one on creating characters (7,5 minutes): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1U120OLj7Nw
And I personally love this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=I2T2...=endscreen

Great news! I'm at my father-in-law's house, and he told me that in 4 days, there is going to be a new release of Krita!
The program should be working for Windows as well now. The new version also comes with some great new features that can be helpful for any type of spriting. I will keep this post short, its probably best to just show you some tutorials so you can see for yourself:
- Coloring tutorial (coloring, using layers & doing the shading)
- Create good-looking textures (great for backgrounds)
- Here's how to configure Krita for pixel art
Article on ImagineFX
From what I've seen so far, this program is actually better for spriting than photoshop and its FREE . I hope you guys have a good use of this program.
Be sure to hit the button in 4 days .gif) : Download
So, you've decided to give it a try. Here are some essential tricks you must know for LF2 spriting:
- For making multiple selections: press ‘a’ to add, ‘s’ to substract from your selection, ‘t’ to move your selection, and ‘r’ to replace(the default).
- For LF2, you often need a 100% black pixel. You can get this by selecting the default brush, going to brush settings, and checking the box named 'sharpness'. Done!

It is a pretty advanced program. Got some very useful functions that photoshop doesn´t have, though. Such as tools to measure distance between two points, smoother line painting and I especially like the brushes. It could be a good alternative for programs such as photoshop, or it might even be better for you than photoshop if you take the time to learn how to use it.

What system are you using? It might be so that it only works on the newer versions of windows/mac. I can ask the creator (if the answer can not be found on the website, that is)

I´m using Win 7 as well, but it is working fine for me... Not sure if my father-in-law (the head-developper I was talking about) can fix it, but I will report the error to him and maybe he has a fix for you.
