Powerful Magnets?
#1
Does anyone know where i can obtain government grade magnets? I can't seem to find them in any hardware store or online stores for that matter. Or if anyone would be able to tell me how to make a very strong magnet that can possibly wipe out hard drives or be strong enough to attract metals from long distances. It's just a fun side project I was slightly interested in.

I know common household batteries kinda work but I think it would be ineffective for what i had in mind.

edit: I guess what I was sorta thinking of was making something similar to the half-life gravity gun.
But if that were to happen I would have to have it turned on and off like electromagnet crane
(the ones you would find at junk yard = toy story 3 or season 5 episode 1 of breaking bad)

As insanely impossible as it sounds I thought maybe I could attempt to make one.

Luti you are doing wrong, you might destroy humanity even if it needs to be destroyed, this might be the place where apocalyptic scenario comes in when ordinary teenage student with no super powers but with the little of knowledge creates something big which causes the chaos which destroys everything even if hes not the one who is destroying.

p.s maybe ask government or go here http://www.supermagnete.de/eng/

So i actually just found out I shouldn't use Magnets. Instead electric motors conducted by lithium ion batteries should do the trick
edit: holy cow they are expensive. maybe i can go to those places that collect old-worn-out phones (maybe the previous owners didnt care and left the batteries in them or something :P)

For anyone who is interested: neodymium and ceramic magnets are really powerful

So im wondering if this is going to work at all. Its not like i can control the magnetic force in one direction since the field is spread around in all directions. And then harnessing that much battery power would weigh almost as much as a car battery (unless the weight is dispersed around but it would still be freaking heavy :p)

Make somekind of tube/barrel which would keep it going straight but also make it non conductive to the power output, as you know rubber is good against electricity, safety first y u no :). Keeping something like magnetic force going in one direction as you mentioned is likely not possible unless there is something that keeps it tied up.

btw, by any chance are we talking about Rail gun?

im not entirely sure where you want to get with this (we need to skype more!), but when i was planning my iron man styled armour i wanted to use several smaller lithium polymer batteries put in parallel/ series.

oh and the least you can do is turning the magnetic power on and off (and opposite direction?)

maybe look into project ara by google, their magnets are only using power when being changed in state (on/off) and otherwise need no power at all.

All you need to do is, build a strong electromagnet. I dont think its costly. Take an old transformer, use the thinner primary winding. If you dont have a transformer i think it will be difficult to evenly wrap the enameled copper wire around the core. You have got a machine for spinning (We had a study experiment last semester)

You will need AC supply. I'm not sure about how far the field can reach but it is quite powerful for short range and the range can be improved I guess! probably using two coils connected in series aiding or any other methods(I'm not sure exactly..).
a.k.a firzenx or X.

Oh so... like those transformers that we use in our everyday conventional microwaves?

oh and for portability you could use capacitors. that way you can charge up magnetic impulses with lower voltage
