			<description><![CDATA[Hello people. Some of you may have already read this article on Discord, I am sharing it here in the forum as well since I felt this section could use some pick-me-up.<br />
<br />
I usually write design-related articles on my <a href="https://koushik.substack.com/p/i-will-never-be-the-same-person-again" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="mycode_url">substack</a> but this is a slight deviation from the usual ones. I felt like I had an obligation to write about this topic. So many articles are written and being written about the negative effects of social media but none of them inspired me to reduce the time I spend doom-scrolling on Instagram. I knew I wanted to have a meaningful life and cultivate good habits, and have meaningful relationships. But something was not allowing me to do it. I knew it had something to do with my usage of social media but I was never able to put a finger on it. So I went in search of answers. In this article, I am writing what I have understood so far.<br />
<br />
If you look back at your own life, it is defined by certain instances or incidents that changed your perspective of the world and life in general. You could say this is a metamorphosis of the mind. Unlike butterflies, our mind can go through many such transformations inspired by something we saw, heard, or felt. My life is filled with many such instances as well. Whether it was the first time I learned to ride a bicycle, or displayed my artworks in a local gallery, or when my naivety was crushed by twisted co-workers. These experiences were difficult to process. They gave me a deep sense of transformation that will change the trajectory of my life. Such experiences made me the person I am today and informs my worldview. Recently I experienced another transformative moment in my life. I started to read about the power of language, disinformation, and the science behind social media addiction. The combination of these ideas revealed a few things to me.<br />
<br />
First, we need to get the basics right. Language is an abstract concept. Millions of years of evolution have given us the capacity to communicate through words that changed the course of human civilization. Without language, one cannot express their thoughts. Words have no meaning inherently. It is our interpretation of the words that give meaning to it. Controlling language (North Korea) and propaganda (Russia) has had dire consequences throughout history. All of us have heard the phrase “The pen is mightier than the sword”. The dictatorship regimes of the past and present should give you a clear perspective on what this phrase truly means.<br />
<br />
Your thoughts depend on the words you know. The words you know define what you feel and think. What you think leads to actions and your actions have consequences. What you consume has consequences. People want to cultivate good habits, stay healthy, and be productive. We think that we need to change our actions to change our life but what we need to change is what we consume and thereby changing what we think.<br />
<br />
Many neuro-scientific studies elucidate the habit-forming patterns and the neural circuitries that are generated in the brain because of those actions. The more you consume or do something, the stronger the circuit associated with that activity becomes and the more difficult it is to let go of the habit, good or bad. The scientific term for this is neural plasticity. Living in a state of constant excitement has dire physiological consequences. Consuming short bits of content every day will incapacitate our brains of having deep thoughts. If you are someone like me who wants to work on his/her craft, you need to have the ability to enter the flow state of mind more frequently than not. We need to rescue ourselves before we hit the point of no return.<br />
<br />
Habit is one part of the problem but the most dangerous problem of our generation is going to be related to the information we consume on social media. Social media giants have far too much influence on the information we see and it is not preposterous to say that our minds have become slaves to their algorithm. Censorship of information is prevalent and these companies, who claim to be independent bodies have become propaganda machines for the powers that control them.<br />
<br />
I was so self-assured that I am mentally strong enough to use my critical and rational thinking to come to conclusions of my own. One day I caught myself quoting something I saw on Twitter without even understanding it deeply. Google search used to be the best tool we have, but now I am afraid whether we have become too lazy to even search and verify the information we see on social media and are starting to completely trust what we see, subconsciously. Even if your friends share something with you, you should verify it with multiple sources before coming to any conclusions.<br />
<br />
Recently I saw a poll claiming that Prime Minister Modi’s approval rating is 66%. Every media outlet ran with this story. I tried to look into the company website that did the survey and the data was hidden behind a paywall. I am not going to believe it until I see it. Key metrics like age categories, sex, region, and no. of people would have sufficed without even disclosing the entire data but it was not available for public consumption. Even if the survey was done with good intentions, I think you should exercise your critical thinking and not believe it till you see the data for yourself.<br />
<br />
Another instance of how we might be susceptible to wrong ideas is <a href="https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E3qzsNgVkAY-mUU?format=jpg&amp;name=medium" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="mycode_url">this chart</a>. Anyone who sees this chart might immediately conclude that income should be distributed evenly. That might sound reasonable, but you should also take into account where India as a country stands globally [<a href="https://ourworldindata.org/poverty-minimum-growth-needed" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="mycode_url">Article Link</a>]. I am not a data science expert but I think the second article changes the entire narrative.<br />
<br />
The Internet was new, technology was fascinating. We have gone ahead and built these tools that allow us to interact with millions of people without considering the repercussions. Twitter was built with the naive aim of sharing your activities with your friends. Now it is most probably separating your friends away from you. Being hooked on social media 24/7 is not doing us any good. It is important to understand how easy it is to trick our brains to control our thoughts, actions, and outcomes. If you want to foster connection with people across the world, then these social media platforms are not the tools we need.<br />
<br />
10 years of social media usage should give us a rough idea of the pros and cons and what we should do. The combination of social media addiction and manipulation through disinformation is deadly, and the consequences are catastrophic, to say the least. Our society has been heavily polarized over the past decade, thanks to these Big Tech companies.<br />
<br />
The answer to this problem is simple on the surface. Verify what you read and cultivate better thoughts. But it takes effort to rewire our brains to suppress the strength of these “bad-circuitries” we have formed due to our social media usage. We need to replace that with new ones and hopefully good ones. Exercise your critical thinking and make sure you put the right things in your head. Read more about addiction and disinformation tactics. Freedom of thought is freedom of expression, and it is core to our very being.<br />
<br />
It is easy to get cynical. But I am optimistic that we can rescue ourselves from this mess we have created. There are many beautiful things in life to be inspired by. How does a seed, however tiny it may be, contain enough information to grow into a giant tree? How do two highly combustible gases combine to produce water? What is love, and the meaning of life? What should be our relationship to death? How do we seek to improve ourselves and the community we live in? We have limited time on this planet and we should not be spending time chasing dopamine hits. Talk with your friends and see what they think about this article. The time is now. Let us not delay it any further. Thank you.<br />

			<description><![CDATA[I've been reading a lot on this topic, most notably works of Carlo Rovelli where the question continuously arises in the context of Quantum Gravity, and various texts on Statistical Mechanics and the origins of irreversibility most notably in the book of Price Huw "Time's Arrow and Archimedes' Point". Most of these ideas are things stolen from these. I urge you in particular, if you have some training in physics, to check out <a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/0903.3832.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="mycode_url">this essay</a> by Rovelli which should make for a great bedtime reading.<br />
<br />
So let me pose the question: <span style="font-weight: bold;" class="mycode_b">What is time?</span><br />
<br />
Let us look at how we have tracked time:<br />
<br />
1- In the past, people used to measure time by looking at positions of shadows. <br />
2- Nowadays, a second is defined in terms of the frequency of an emission of some element (which element and what transmission is not important).<br />
<br />
We see that time is always measured in relation to something else that in itself evolves in time. A year is how long it takes for the Earth to go around the Sun. Once again, that's a relational definition. <br />
<br />
Is time really absolute? Newton came by and introduced the notion of absolute time and had a lot of success. He presumed there is a clock ticking in the bacgkround, and everything else evolves according to it. Einstein came later on and found that moving clocks will tick faster than clocks at rest. And so there is no absolute clock ticking in the background that everyone will agree on.<br />
<br />
Even more radical, was Einstein's discovery that the gravitational field is nothing but spacetime itself. Moreover, In the "canonical" description of gravity, a description where an object called "the Hamiltonian" plays a starring role in determining the time evolution, the Hamiltonian is zero (on the bulk). This means that there's no "time evolution" in the theory.<br />
<div class="tborder spoiler"><div class="spoiler_header">Technical <a href="javascript:void(0);" onclick="javascript:if(parentNode.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('div')[1].style.display=='block'){parentNode.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('div')[1].style.display='none';this.innerHTML='(Click to View)';this.parentNode.className = 'spoiler_header';}else {parentNode.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('div')[1].style.display='block';this.innerHTML='(Click to Hide)';;this.parentNode.className += ' spoiler_header_cornered';}">(Click to View)</a></div><div class="spoiler_body" style="display: none;">
There's a common misconception that the above is a peculiar feature only of quantum gravity or even just gravity. However, this feature is common among all diffeomorphism invariant theories. As an exercise, try computing the Hamiltonian of a relativistic particle (which is invariant under reparametrisation) and you'll see that it also vanishes.</div></div>
We "remember" the past, but not the future. We experience "moving" towards the future, but not the past. <br />
<br />
Yet, the fundamental laws of physics seem to show no prejudice towards one direction of time over the other. In fact, in the theory of gravity/spacetime, one needs to artificially insert a time orientation. <br />
<div class="tborder spoiler"><div class="spoiler_header">Technical <a href="javascript:void(0);" onclick="javascript:if(parentNode.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('div')[1].style.display=='block'){parentNode.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('div')[1].style.display='none';this.innerHTML='(Click to View)';this.parentNode.className = 'spoiler_header';}else {parentNode.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('div')[1].style.display='block';this.innerHTML='(Click to Hide)';;this.parentNode.className += ' spoiler_header_cornered';}">(Click to View)</a></div><div class="spoiler_body" style="display: none;">
You can check that both Newton's 2nd law and the Schrödinger equation are time-reversal invariant. (with the latter, you also need to take the complex conjugate of the wave function).</div></div>
Where then does this feeling of time come from? A common resolution is that time is only a feature of the macroscopic world. In particular, the macroscopic world is additionally governed by the laws of thermodynamics. In particular, the 2nd law states that a quantity called "entropy" of an isolated system cannot decrease in a process that takes you from one state to another. Perhaps then, we can define the "past" to be the set of states where entropy is low, and the future to be the set of states where entropy is high. <br />
<br />
One can then think that perhaps our perception of time is purely psychological. We remember the past, because it has lower entropy. In very sloppy terms, entropy is a measure of "disorder" of a system. You reckon if you see a ruined castle that it would be easier to reenact how the castle "was" than it is to imagine how a castle will look like following an earthquake that brings it to ruins. Perhaps, there is only a "now", and the memories of the past are just interpretations and interpolations of the brain of what possible more orderly states could bring you to your current state. Of course, your brain would be much more successful in doing that than to interpolate towards a less orderly state where the possibilities are far more. <br />
<br />
The problem now is that entropy depends on the choice of macroscopic variables. For an example, consider bringing a visually impaired person who cannot distinguish different shapes, and a colourblind who cannot distinguish different colours. Bring an ensemble of objects of different shapes and different colours. To the first person, sorting these balls by their colours will make them look most orderly (they observe low entropy), but not so to the second person who will only see a seemingly random arrangement of shapes (they observe high entropy). If however you sort the balls according to their shapes, the situation reverses and now the first person will classify the state as high entropy and the second person will classify it as low entropy. <br />
<br />
I'll leave it to you to think about the implications of what this could mean about our perception of time ?_?]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[Hey all,<br />
<br />
Maybe some of you guys know that I'm a fitness trainer in real life. I have studied sports and physical therapy. <br />
<br />
Why do I care so much about movement? Well, I know both sides of the coin: being active and being inactive. From my experience, being physically active helps a lot in different aspects of life. I've gained a lot of self-confidence, awareness and health-benefits by investing time and energy in training.<br />
<br />
Especially if you're sitting for hours every day, this might get you into trouble over time (pain, stiffness, weakness). It's important to move, a lot. Only by moving, you'll be able to grow stronger. <br />
<br />
<br />
In this topic, you can ask me stuff related to movement, pain, fitness, learning new skills, etcetera! Typical questions would be:<br />
- Where do I start?<br />
- How much should I train?<br />
- Do I need a gym membership / what can I do at home?<br />
- What can I do in daily life to stay healthy?<br />
<br />
It may take quite some time before I answer (I'm here only once every few weeks/months), but I'll try to answer your questions as well as I can.]]></description>

In this topic, you can ask me stuff related to movement, pain, fitness, learning new skills, etcetera! Typical questions would be:<br />
- Where do I start?<br />
- How much should I train?<br />
- Do I need a gym membership / what can I do at home?<br />
- What can I do in daily life to stay healthy?<br />
<br />
It may take quite some time before I answer (I'm here only once every few weeks/months), but I'll try to answer your questions as well as I can.]]></content:encoded>

			<description><![CDATA[I realize people come to this forum for fun. But I think this post might be interesting for everybody to read and to give it some thought, as it might change your perception on life.<br />
<br />
<hr class="mycode_hr" />
<br />
Have you ever felt unhappy about your life? Because of all the things that you have to do, because of everything that is expected from you, because you get a limited amount of choices in life? Everything is planned out for us as a child and when we think or act differently, this behavior is discouraged. This doesn't change much in adulthood.<br />
<br />
We might THINK we make our own choices, but the truth is this: we are forced into a certain way of thinking from the very beginning of our childhood. Structure can be a really good thing, but western society doesn't allow thinking outside of the box and mostly ignores what people want, even though people usually don't realize this.<br />
<br />
At the age of 5, our creative potential is about 80%.<br />
At the age of 8, this creative potential has alreay been reduced to about 20%.<br />
At the age of 40, it is very hard to think outside of the box at all, because we have nearly no creativity left in us. <br />
<br />
From the moment we go to school for the very first time, we are taught to do what is expected from us. We have to fit in a certain structure and way of thinking and behaving. We are taught to 'study hard, work hard and get a good job' and to do this in a certain structure, while this totally neglects what we want to do. Beside ignoring the fact that we often can't do what we want to do, we are continuously being corrected by parents and teachers. While sometimes correction can be good, it very often isn't. Very often, things that actually aren't wrong, are being corrected, and therefore it kills people's creativity. No wonder we often think adults are boring, right? 90% or more just do exactly as they are told, don't dare to think different. You can't blame these people because they were shaped this way by their environment and they probably don't even know about it. But you are still young and probably more creative. Don't believe everything you are taught.<br />
<br />
Here's an example of what I mean:<br />
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/iG9CE55wbtY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true"></iframe><br />
<br />
<br />
What I believe is the following:<br />
- People need creative thinking to be themselves, and because of that they need creative thinking to be happy at all in life<br />
- Therefor it is very okay to be different. Even the greatest geniuses in time were all different AND people thought their ideas were stupid most of the time.<br />
- Everybody should be paying attention to moments of just BEING, where they take the time to really feel what is going on in their heads and body. Mindfulness can be a big help to get your mind at peace. This is because we are usually just focussed on doing things, and we ignore our feelings and body. Allow your thoughts and feelings, as they are not wrong, even if society says so.<br />
- Go to bed in time and think your day through. How was your day, how did you feel, what did you do well today? <br />
- Try to stay realistic, as seeing the world as it is increases your happiness. Nobody really understands the world around us, but if you can understand what I am trying to share with you here, this might increase your happiness.<br />
- Don't talk down on yourself, as we are already in a place where very little is right and very much is wrong. If you think something might be wrong, think it through. Are you being realistic?<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I challenge you to do the following: <br />
- Put away your phone, laptop and any other distraction<br />
- Close your eyes and focus on your breathing for a minute<br />
- For about 5 minutes, with your eyes closed, try to notice what thoughts are going through your head. Don't force yourself to think, this notice what thoughts come by<br />
- Write down what thoughts and feelings you experienced, for yourself<br />
- (eventually share your experience with us)]]></description>

<br />
I'm not discounting all requirements. But in these types of cases you can work around them.<br />
<br />
I'll also concede you probably won't like the alternatives.. but nonetheless you are still deciding based on your preferences and aren't forced to stick with it just because you "need" to. there are people out there that don't have jobs and still get what they want without resorting to the typical requirements.<br />
<br />
Resorting to crime is one of many ways. some people would find it harder to take that option because needless to say it's against their values or they don't want to risk getting caught. To avoid that scenario one could be a little bit more creative and persuade others to do things for you. For the most part i believe there are a lot of possible ways to achieve your goals. Of course people tend to look for the most efficient and easiest path that largely satisfies their desires and remains contingent upon their preferences. So you still want said thing in order to get that thing and vice versa. Even if you don't like it one can say they would tend to go for something like that or prefer it because it is the best option for them (to meet said desire/goal)<br />
<blockquote class="mycode_quote"><cite>Friend Wrote:</cite>It's not about required norms. I'm on the pursuit of happiness, and happiness requires my books to be made.<br />
<blockquote class="mycode_quote"><cite>I Wrote:</cite>if you still want to pursue happiness it doesn't necessarily have to be making your books. you can still find many many ways of achieving this goal. it seems to me it would make more sense that you would value your books above all else because this is a worthy achievement to pursue. Because if the most effective way to make your books is to suffer it could be worth it. if one doesn't want to go explore other routes then that means you don't necessarily care if the books make you happy so long as you are happy or comfortable then that is okay too<br />
<br />
i think happiness will naturally come once i achieve my goals. It doesn't necessarily mean it will make me happy so long as I think it is meaningful to pursue.<br />
<br />
Say someone values the truth so much but it only makes them miserable. If that is their worthy goal and they are quite persistent to attain it then I think that is fine so long as it doesn't interfere against my goals and preferences. Happiness to me feels over rated. There are different levels of happiness but to me achieving your goals seems much more worthwhile since there's virtually unlimited things to do vs feeling one sort of way with varying degrees of stimulating satisfaction.<br />
<br />
if you want to take your position even further we could go all the way down to cause and effect or determinism. then there really is no way we can avoid our actions because they were already made for us.<br />
<br />
but i think in the context we really were talking about our desires.. which stem from our wants rather than our needs. every time someone tells me they need this or they need that... I'm usually very skeptical. one can argue they are forced to desire such things because there really is no way of avoiding the laws of physics if we have no free will. But it just doesn't seem pragmatic to me to ignore the agency of individuals.</blockquote></blockquote></blockquote></blockquote></blockquote></blockquote></blockquote></blockquote></blockquote></div></div>

Just thinking about next year, you can choose things that you wish to do, and actually do them, such as becoming a better spriter or artist, or being able to do 100 push ups at one go or something (I can do 30 <img src="https://lf-empire.de/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif" alt=":p" title=":p" class="smilie smilie_22" />)<br />

Democracy is the most prevalent form of government all over the world. People prefer democracy to dictatorship, simply because of the freedom/rights that they are able to enjoy which is absent in dictatorship.<br />

But people can be easily deluded by the thought of democracy/dictatorship. Sometimes dictatorship can be more effective than democracy in certain aspects. Dictatorship is not necessarily tyranny. <br />

I will leave it to you guys to discuss about the kind of governance your country adapts, how it affects the growth of your country and which form of government you prefer?<br />
<br />
<span style="font-weight: bold;" class="mycode_b">conclusion:</span><br />
<br />
This sums up the whole discussion. Even though mini-groups exist forming a larger group of people, the demands of each individual group cannot be fulfilled. Although not all the group might be well educated, this creates a whole different problem resulting in a mob movement. And people are not willing to involve themselves and practice democracy. We can as a result in my country at least suddenly newer groups emerge from no-where. Recently LGBT marriage was made legal in America, suddenly I am able to see there are many LGBT groups popping up all over the country. US government satisfied their need and so they are demanding our government to make it legal. Such is the situation right now. People are so selfish and when they want their needs to be satisfied they utilize the freedom of speech and right to express themselves as a weapon. Democracy wants active participation of the citizens. This doesn't mean creating a group and being idle, When a newly imposed law contradicts their theory, protest.Rather sit and come to conclusion.<br />
<br />
It is much more clear now that these voicing rights are completely absent in any other form of government! Aristocracy and oligarchy might have a group of people different sectors, but what if these different sectors are from same religion. As far as I know, a king and their ministers are from same community/religion.<br />
<br />
Ultimately the conclusion could be that there is no perfect form of government(that we know of already). The whole thing boils down to active participation of citizens in a decent and non-idiotic ways with advice from the professionals. Democracy is inevitable in recent years. <title><![CDATA[Transition phases and reconstructing life]]></title>

			<dc:creator><![CDATA[<a href="https://lf-empire.de/forum/member.php?action=profile&uid=752">Memento</a>]]></dc:creator>
			<guid isPermaLink="false">https://lf-empire.de/forum/showthread.php?tid=10089</guid>
			<description><![CDATA[I'd like to talk about a serious topic: constructing &amp; reconstructing life.<br />
<br />
There are always phases in your life where you change as a person. If I look back to myself when I was 15 years old for example, I've grown a lot in several aspects in these 10 years. New changes will also come in the next 10 years.<br />
<br />
Usually people grow stronger, sometimes people stagnate because of depressions and such. Climb out of this, and it will likely make you even stronger than before, as you were able to find a way to cope with your problems.<br />
<br />
People always change in some aspects:<br />
- Socially<br />
- Intelligence<br />
- Physically<br />
- Responsibility<br />
- Probably more<br />
<br />
Ask yourself: <br />
- what phase are you in right now? In other words, what would describe YOU at this moment in your life? Are you serious, driven by ambitions, healthy, socially strong? Or perhaps you are currently in a phase where you want to do live life to it's fullest and can't commit to anything serious (not necessarily a bad thing)?<br />
- In what aspects you do feel you've changed in the last feel years?<br />
- How do you cope with your problems, do you accept them or do you run away from them?<br />
<br />
Just a topic to let you guys think on yourselves for a moment, write down your thoughts and perhaps you'll even learn things about yourself while typing.<br />
<br />
<br />
As for myself:<br />
<div class="tborder spoiler"><div class="spoiler_header">Spoiler <a href="javascript:void(0);" onclick="javascript:if(parentNode.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('div')[1].style.display=='block'){parentNode.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('div')[1].style.display='none';this.innerHTML='(Click to View)';this.parentNode.className = 'spoiler_header';}else {parentNode.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('div')[1].style.display='block';this.innerHTML='(Click to Hide)';this.parentNode.className += ' spoiler_header_cornered';}">(Click to View)</a></div><div class="spoiler_body" style="display: none;">
I can't give a clear answer yet, but it will come in a few days. This day, constructing and reconstructing life is something I really want to give some extra thought, as I will have to reconstruct my life in the coming period.<br />
<br />
I broke up with my ex-girlfriend 3 months ago. Before the break-up, I was self-confident, felt strong, healthy, I was ambitious about my study, didn't party so much but enjoyed things like nature and friends. Right now I feel like I'm in a phase where I haven't had enough time to process everything that has happened in that break-up. I broke up, than immediately started with my internships for 40 hours a week and even had a second break-up because I was so in love with another girl. But I didn't have the space and time to really sit and think on everything that had happened, and on the behavior I was showing. <br />
<br />
I ran away from all my problems by going out way too much, drinking too much alcohol at least 2 times a week and stuff. Internships didn't go well at all because of my personal problems, so I quit internships yesterday. Now I have time to overthink what I have been doing in the last 3 months and in the years before that, and I can reconstruct my life. I will ask myself the same questions as I asked you guys ^.<br />
<br />
I hope answering these questions I asked will help YOU further in life as well <img src="https://lf-empire.de/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif" alt=":)" title=":)" class="smilie smilie_19" /></div></div>]]></description>
