Well, it really depends what you are going to put in this "random" space. One of the great things about this forum is that it is "ad-free" (because the mainsite ads fuel for enough money to support the forums as well).
Putting random pictures and ads on the right side of the banner (even if they're just links from the mainsite) make it seem too, err.....cluttered?
I would suggest that the banner be widened, or maybe you could add a mini-pm "inbox" bar or window.
By the way, I'm not the one who voted "No, leave it as it is"
