I think the stereotypical nihilist makes the mistake of saying everything is pointless when all their subjective preferences stem from their biological desires and to me I think that these are important to us so its not entirely pointless unless we are talking about the grand scheme of things like its some intrinsic universal purpose to it.
If we are talking about raw nihilism, then in one way or another it will bring misery. If you truly believe life is meaningless, then you'll have no motivation to accomplish anything. If you cannot distinguish right from wrong, then you'll end up doing things that will harm you in one way or another.
If you yield to your animal instincts and disregard all forms of knowledge and reason, then you are no longer a human being (the opposite also being true). Humans are gifted with reason, the necessity to find a purpose in life drifts from it.
It is easier to evolve as a whole (and therefore individually) if we all share a common goal and belief, hence religion being necessary to support the weak minded who cannot find a purpose in their lives. When you don't believe in something, you'll fall for anything.
