Why wont you ask, how many reading rules?

Admins, why wont you making something like this:
When registering they should answer some questions from forum rules thread(when do you get warn, how many warn point for rule 3)

In all cases, rather have nothing instead of something negative.
Empty is an overstatement in first place, because there will always be those few people never leaving LFE. If necessary, I would still pick only having them, instead of hundreds of members from whom the most are simply spamming around (not saying it currently is that bad, just expressing my oppinion).

You should take a look at the IC forum XD We got only a few rules, accomodated by an instant-ban if you ignore them, but everything else is up to the users. As result we got a large community, no spam, barely flame and an acid pool in the suggestions forum quickly filtering people out.
Sometimes I think I've created a monster, though...

Dude, have you even read my post? It won't change anything, as it won't change their age and their understanding about discussion. Maybe I am just being very stubborn while I repeat that over and over again, but you make me feel bad that I posted this in front of whole community and not staff.
You can't change people' age, nor can you teach them while trashing. At least, that is not a very convenient way of doing it.

That is a good point, actually. So you're suggesting cleaning every little post that is violating the rules, and let the smartest survive? I guess that's the only way...

Could you elaborate a bit more on the rules you use in your forum, which is, as far as I know, more populated by young people, than LFE?

how you will ever know answer, when you haven't heard or read about it.

Simoneon edited this post 06-06-2012 09:40 AM because:
If it wasn't an international community, this rule would be enforced. But now, just because of this, you probably would have 150% warn by now.

When I arrived at LF-global, it was my first time seeing an online forum
I don't really understand most of the thing, so posting things in the wrong place, or things that are considered spams, were quite impossible for me to avoid that time. But the moderators were quite strict about it, I was embarrassed quite much (as a young boy realizing he's stupid) and so I left LFG and went to LFE

I can point out a problem, but not the solution, ehehehe.

or maybe. Trash it, but be very polite to new members when giving warnings. Though, against more mature people, we would have to use harsher words. I believe even young people just need some time to understand the mechanics and the ethics in online forums.

Of course, about bad English, we shouldn't worry too much as long as they're doing their best and their posts are still understandable. We individually should try to get better though, imitating others' is a good way to start, because we can eventually get used to the new way of saying something.

And guess what, the first time I went to my first online forum (which is (sadly), LFG), I went to read the rules, but still, I understand nothing of the forums. You know, like the structure of a forum. What is thread? What is forum? What is post, sub-forum or category, or anything else you can find in the 'weird website'? It was really confusing for me, the rules isn't much of a help either for n00b.

as a younger user, i know that it's "exciting" to get a reply to your thread (i remember that when i was younger), but you must learn to see what posts are useful and what aren't.

threads like [this] don't contain anything intellectually stimulating, so it's anti-satisfying to read.

you can post posts like "nice", but word it so that there's feeling into it.[1]

intellectual posts don't have to contain more than one word[2], but more often than not they must

and at this point you have already indirectly found a solution

i'm sure someone who has already left us said something like this:
mods should be role models, not just trash collectors

so what's the solution?
if you simon (or any other mod in fact) think that a post on your report list (or directly in front of your eyes in the forum) is super shallow and not adding anything to the community except for saying "nice, i like this!" - but somehow just doesn't really break any rules
then why not answer this poor user, ask him why he thinks so - what does he like about it?

really any member in this forum could/should do this if he's got problems with 'spam' posts (which might just be a showcase of gratitude - why the hell punish that?)
especially the thread starter that is being praised
but mods actually do a job here so they really should be active in that way - most of all the global ones
(or am i misunderstanding the term global moderator?)

so either get some members to actually communicate with those that seem to have trouble with it (that way they will learn) - or yes, decide for a more silent community and trash everything that bores you

you've got it easy with your manual signature >:(

others struggle with the minimum character count[3]

edit: oh and thanks for posting publically, it looks like this would've drowned pretty badly inside the staff area

I haven't read the thread (only OP) so it might have been said already, but in any case - Accomodate forum so it won't end up deserted. It's obvious that only next generations can keep LF alive and their forumposting/english skills are obviously not on par with standarts around. Constant ban/post deletion might keep any newcomers out of here and eventually even old geezers will leave due to nothingshappenning. So I'd think twice if something like short sentence post is really worth the trouble of causing possible eventual abandonment of forum.

Sometimes a simple "well done" or "cool" has much more value than you can imagine.

well, maybe we should make a new rule like "dont be lazy when posting".
i believe most users could say much more than they do with their single word posts, but they do not want to.
users should always think what use their post would have and if its worth to post.
of course this is very difficult to learn for beginners (and even some users who are here much longer - wont point my finger at anybody), that is why you shouldnt give warnings but rather help them via post answers or pm.
maybe we should also loosen up the percentage for the rule breaks, like this: newer users get less percent than more experienced users.
this could be realized by referring to their post count or thanks given, but it would probably be better if it was individual - some users are new here, but already have a lot of experience from other forums. some users do not learn fast and post a lot of trash.
well ok, maybe the thanks received would be a way. but then they should be disabled in the forum games lol
